Firaxis Falls Victim To Layoffs

by Meagan Marie on Jul 08, 2010 at 11:00 AM

2K Games confirmed to Kotaku today that they have laid off 20 people from Civilization V developer Firaxis Games. Layoffs have hit the quality assurance, user interface, animator, programmer, and designer departments. Firaxis' official website lists their staff total at 130 individuals.

“I can confirm that Firaxis has realigned its development resources in order to streamline its development process, reduce costs and maximize the overall performance of the studio,” Wilding told Kotaku. “This will result in the elimination of approximately 20 positions. These reductions will not impact Firaxis' ability to create and deliver AAA titles, including its forthcoming Sid Meier's Civilization V and Sid Meier's Civilization Network for Facebook.”

Firaxis’ Civilization V is slated to hit retail this September. With development drawing to a close, we’re not fretting too much about a quality lapse in the newest franchise iteration. Still, it’s sad to see Sid’s studio downsized.
