Runic Finally Talking About Torchlight MMO

by Adam Biessener on Jun 30, 2010 at 07:55 AM

PCGamer is touting its look at the upcoming Torchlight MMO in its next issue. The game will apparently retain the fast-paced action focus that Torchlight is known for, and support ongoing content through microtransactions.

Runic co-founder Travis Baldree has an interesting view on microtransactions, particularly for a guy who is building a game around them. "I will never, ever buy a microtransaction item," he told PCGamer. "I'm that kind of player. And the game has to be enjoyable for me, too. We don’t want our monetisation stuff to offer ways to skip the game because the game is boring."

Well said, Travis. As much as I want to play an expanded Torchlight with my friends, I don't want to have to choose between grinding for dozens of hours or paying five bucks for a triple-XP potion. The Runic team's previous game (when they were at Flagship Seattle), Mythos, was built around offering map scrolls for sale. These maps opened up randomized dungeons where players could find unique monsters and often better treasure. I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar concept resurface in the Torchlight MMO.
