PSN Update 3.40 Adds Video Editing, Content Ratings, More

Sometimes it seems like keeping your PlayStation 3 firmware up to day is a full-time job—not that we’re complaining. Sony’s done a terrific job of adding new features, polishing the rough spots, and generally keeping things ticking smoothly on the PS3 front. Well, there’s now a new update to snag. Version 3.40 won’t necessarily knock your face off or anything, but it does add a few interesting features.

First, it paves the way for PlayStation Plus, Sony’s premium version of the PlayStation Network. Existing PSN members won’t see any of their existing access blocked, throttled, or otherwise affected, but those who spring for the annual subscription will get early access to betas, free downloads, and other stuff.

The photo gallery is getting some new functionality in the form of Facebook and Picasa Web Album support. Now you’ll be able to upload photos to those online services and browse and comment on friends’ photos. You can also share photos with PSN friends.
Next, a new video editor and uploader tool has been added to the XMB. Users can grab video from their system and then edit it and share it on Facebook and YouTube.

Everyone likes to rate stuff, and now you’ll have a chance to do it on the PlayStation Network. Head over to the PlayStation Store and rate the things you’ve bought with a one- to five-star rating.
Finally, if you’re trying to keep your power consumption low, the default setting for the PS3’s auto-off is now set at two hours.

Those are the highlights for v3.40, straight from Sony. Maybe Sony can add cross-game chat support in the next update? Please, oh please?
