Bungie Pondered Halo 4 Before Working On Reach

by Jeff Cork on Jun 28, 2010 at 05:38 AM

What’s going on with Halo, anyway? With Halo: ODST and the upcoming Halo: Reach, players have had a chance to see what happened in the Halo universe before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. Players who grew attached to Master Chief have been left wondering what exactly happened to the hero. It turns out, there are a few folks at Bungie who wondered the same thing.

In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, community manager Brian Jarrard says that the team considered working on a Halo 4 before they instead focused on Halo: Reach.

"Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper 'Halo 4,' where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story," says Jarrard.

Jarrard also confirms that Master Chief isn’t in the game—either as a playable character or in a cameo—even though he was defending Reach elsewhere during the game’s timeline. Bungie says Halo: Reach will be the last game in the series it will be working on, so it looks like some other studio will be working with Master Chief in the future, should Microsoft want another installment. (And they would be crazy not to do that.)
