Final Fantasy XIV Beta Much Improved From Alpha

Reaction to our early look at the alpha version of Final Fantasy XIV has been mixed around the office, but as is often the case with MMOs, it looks like there will be some major improvements made with the upcoming beta version of the game. Square Enix sent along a video showcasing some of the biggest changes.

As you can see, the graphics have definitely been improved, specifically in the areas of lighting and depth of field, so there's a lot less texture pop-in when moving forward. The battle system also looks significantly faster and more interesting than what we were shown a few months ago.

Check out the video for yourself below and see if the beta improvements have you more interested in Square Enix's latest MMO.

  • Can't wait!

  • How much per month? *eyeroll*
  • I wonder how much it will be as well.

  • What's with the music when it gets to the battle segments? Save that crap for Megaman X.  L(`~`)L

  • I'm more excited for Star Wars: The Old Republic to become my new MMO fix.  Final Fantasy just doesn't look compelling enough for me to even try it =(

  • Yeah....I'll wait for TOR...

  • Now that looks like something worth playing, I loved FFXI, but it basically sucked.  I hope this is good.

  • Final Fantasy VIII was the first game I ever played, so the series holds a special place in my heart. Right now, I don't think I like the series that much anymore and that upsets me a lot. The turn-based play just feels too slow now. I'd rather another game more along the lines of Dirge of Cerberus.

  • i see a huge difference, graphics wise. it looks just awesome. also, i love what they've done with the battle system. it looks much more active and fun. i just signed up for the PS3 beta a few days ago!
  • usually a bust from square enix, but it looks like the hit the bull right between the eyes on this one, but i still think the combat should be a little faster. When are we going to see an MMO with live action combat, such as a GOW style MMO?!?!?!

  • i had planned to get it before and still plan to now. its looking great.

  • i dont want this, i want Versus XIII

  • This may just get me into MMOs

  • The game does look much improved since the Alpha, that's for sure.  I mean, I can only echo what you already stated in the article.

It is true that combat still appears to be a bit slow, but I think that's only because we've been spoiled by combat in games like WoW, where characters are constantly attacking, and attacking very quickly.  If anything, a scaled-down pace of combat is perhaps a more realistic approach to combat, and I'm all right with that.  Ultimately, slowing down the pace of combat doesn't matter as much, anyway, as long as you aren't going up against enemies with millions of hitpoints.  More hitpoints does not a challenging boss-fight make.

Also, I loved that the playable character in the alpha test was Alpha Alphaa, and the playable character in the beta test was Beta Beta.  Cute.

  • I'm getting this as long as you don't have to pay monthly

  • I definatly noticed the differnce in the lighting in the Beta, looks a lot better.  Overall, the game looks beautiful, and hopefully it fares a lot better than XI.

  • Nice but the only MMO I seriously see myself playing is The Old Republic.

  • Looks like FInal Fantasy XI-2.   Boy, that combat looked very run of the mill and boring.  I played Final Fantasy XI for several years but in comparison with what is coming out in the MMO world, I think I'll just play WoW's new expansion until Star Wars: The Old Republic comes out.  Now that game's dev videos are amazing!!!

  • I guess I'm the only one that thought the original alpha battle system looked awesome. Been playing FF for sooo long and cheered when I saw how much the alpha version battle system resembled that of the old school FF's. Guess its just a different turn-based RPG audience these days =/ Not that the beta battle system looks bad and maybe it is a real step up. (i didnt get to play the alpha =( but in my opinion, faster isnt always better (P.S. thats what she said)

  • i love final fantasy but hated final fantasy XI. stick to the solid classic titles like 1-10 square enix or ill have to spend my useless money somewhere else...
