The lights are on
After a week of game reveals, tech demonstrations, Cirque du Soleil freakshows, and a weekend of the deepest sleep us GI editors have ever had, E3 is over. Now that we've taken some time to separate ourselves from the madness, we've come up with our picks for the best that E3 had to offer.
Navigating through the crowded show floor, one can expect to be assaulted by military shooters, big-budget crime games, and other flashy franchises both gratuitous and gory in nature. This truth makes it that much more impressive, then, that the sequel to Valve’s surprise critical darling garnered our vote for Best of Show. Intelligent, innovative, and massively entertaining, Portal 2 is easily one of our top anticipated games of 2011.
In the original Infamous, you assumed control of a ridiculously powerful electric superhero that could throw lightning grenades and summon thunderstorms. We didn't think it could get much cooler than that, but Sucker Punch proved us wrong with Infamous 2. With a sweet new locale, an assortment of new powers (electric tornadoes!), and an intriguing story, we can't wait to see what's next for the electric man.
Gears of War 3
Bulletstorm may be the new kid on Epic's block, but that doesn't mean we don't have plenty to look forward to in the Locust-slaying Gears series. With more variety in its campaign, visuals that top even the series high standards, four-player co-op, and the new Beast mode, Gears is looking better than ever.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Everyone knew we'd be seeing a new Zelda title this year, but that didn't take away any of our excitement for it. After some unfortunate technical hiccups during the Nintendo presser, we were thrilled to find that the game handled like a dream. Considering the only other Zelda on the system is essentially a Gamecube port, it's great to see a built-from-the-ground-up adventure made just for the Wii.
While disappointed by the delay of Portal 2 to an undisclosed window
in 2011, the announcement that Valve is rescinding their ban on
PlayStation 3 development nearly made up for the agonizing wait. The
time already invested into the game shows – improvements to the
graphics, level design, and music were immediately apparent. Now that
the PlayStation 3 is on the platform roster, more gamers than ever
before will be able to enjoy Portal 2 come launch day.

yeah!! gears 3 i cant wait
i cant open 2-5 :( :( :(
Awesome. Wish I could've been there. Portal 2 was up there alot. That must mean it's go a 99% chance of being awesome... GEARS OF WAR 3. That was awesome
Im very surprised Crysis 2 didnt get any love the game looked amazing.Especially since it is coming to 360 and PS3.But yeah all the same there where a couple big games that didnt make this list which is a shocker to say the least.
Nice list. Glad to see that there weren't any games that I totally missed.
Really? Skyward Sword won of best of e3? So, all a game needs to win an GI "Best of" award is have a crappy test room, and badly shown off demo, pathetic and unfinished visuals, and a bankable well known name? COME ON GI - Nintendo showed off Zelda WAAAAAY too early. It OBVIOUSLY looks worse than Twilight Princess, with simplistic geometry and badly painted textures. Christ - the e3 demo was like one "forest room" with two enemies and a tree in it!
I realize this is early, and they very well could pull off the visual style by the time the game ships (for example, adding a sketchy filter like in Valkyria Chronicles and stylized lighting like Shadow of the Colossus). However, this is about e3 demos, and Zelda had ONE OF THE WORST of the show! You're just giving it to Zelda 'cuz of the name brand - stop giving it away! Nintendo doesn't need this sh*t; they need their big franchises to EARN these rewards, lest they (continue to) get lazy.
Epic Mickey? Donkey Kong Country? Metroid Other M? Kirby's Epic Yarn? GoldenEye? Jeez laweez; there were so many other Wii games that looked inventive, and were fun, and ambitious and polished. What the he** were you guys thinking? Like a Zelda game needs these accolades to sell. You guys are lazy, plain and simple, and didn't even think about this, "Best of Wii" award. :(
I think Portal 2 was the Game of Show because the first was so original and creative and the sequel seems to expand on that 100 fold. I'm inclined to say LittleBigPlanet 2, but I don't think they've showed enough of the game yet. And Vinsanity, while I do think they did show Zelda off too early, I think it was more about the idea of a new Zelda and roughly how it will work. You really should run around at every website yelling treason when they give their OPINION.
NO TWISTED METAL???????
awesome list of games awarded congrats 2 the developers
I'm gonna have fun with Brotherhood's multiplayer. But, the 3DS was definitely my favorite to come out of E3 this year.
Hmm, cool but you guys forgot Reach.
Need For Speed is going to reclaim it's title as the best racing game ever.
Was Portal 2 actually playable and was it because it was coming to the PS3 that you gave it best in show?
*nod* Seems like a very predictable list, the only slight surprises are Deus Ex and Bulletstorm for their respective categories. I hope the best for Deus Ex, but even with all the great publicity Bulletstorm has had... I still have my reservations.
Where is Fallout: New Vegas???HMM?!?!?!!?!?!?!Fallout is one of the if not the best rpg series ever made! And any Fallout news DESERVES to be on top, plus what Obsidian is doing is amazing! With all the modifications...I just don't see why its not on this list.
I saw the portal 2 trailer just now on yahoo games and it looked awesome! Now, I have to beat portal....
I'm very surprised Portal 2 won so many awards. But it must have a really good press conference. But I'm glad Skyward Sword got Best Wii Game.
While I am impressed with Nintendo giving us 3D without the glasses, I don't agree with the 3DS being the "Best Tech." Come on, you guys know Kinect has a lot more potential to it than just stuff looking like it's popping out of a screen.
Also, I don't know how you guys list an analog stick and "truly impressive power" amongst your reasons for giving the 3DS the Best Tech award. The PSP has had those things since it was released.
Dead Space 2, Twisted Metal, Portal 2, the "3DS", E3 was amazing.
E3 didn't disappoint this year. The upcoming games (especially those not mentioned) will bode well for the industry.
