The lights are on
Yes, actually. While last week's announcement of the new Xbox 360 slim promised much needed changed to the console, many were left wondering if the system really was more quiet than the current model. Today we received a brand new one and popped in a few games to find out.
Starting with one of the loudest games we've ever played, Mass Effect 2, we fired up a new game and put the TV on mute. The verdict? Well it seems to make the same sounds as before, just much quieter all around. Getting really close to the unit, I could hear the system making it's normal searching and seeking sounds but thanks to the new optical drive and fan system, it's not really an issue. It really is a big difference. And for good measure, the disc version of Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and the Damned was thrown in as well with the same results.
While the amount of decibels a console makes might not really be a reason to buy or not to buy, many Xbox 360s in the wild are either dead or dying thanks to the red ring of death. While we cannot say that these new ones wont suffer the same fate, we can say they pack in all of the good stuff that used to cost more like 802.11N WiFi, a 250GB HDD and more USB ports than you can shake your fist at.

It looks pretty awesome(and I mean AWESOME!), but alas, I already dished out $400 for the elite. Darn.
i cant believe you guys put up with bricked systems time after time and would still give this afterthought of a console more of your money...smh. this 'slim' version is 2 years late for the market.
i have to say I was a bit skeptical. My family bought me one for Fathers day and I am quite excited. Its a great unit. Very quick, quiet and major loads of fun. Definately worth the purchase. Also its pre configured for the Kinect when it comes out in November.
I'll stick to my OG 360 for now.
The new Xbox 360 is, by design, completely unable to RRoD. How did they do this? They removed the red LEDs in the Ring of Light around the power button. Now it'll just be the GRoD.
Well that's nifty.
There's a video on youtube reviewing this with a guy called chilla frilla. It was a pretty professional video.
ima get one of these maybe
To bad they exhausted all of their time and money on this instead of fixing the originals,so most of us wouln't be on our second, third,or more
I am going to wait for the $199 version before deciding if I decide to get one of these new slims.
if it was not rushed into the market i would feel better about it
I will eventually get this, along with the black Wii, to complete my all black entertainment center.
I'll give it six months to a year before I get one, when they start offering free extended warranties for internal hardware failure. Again.
I will be paying close attention to the reviews though.
I HATE MICROSOFT
Ok am I the only one that picked up what nick said: "Starting with one of the loudest games we've ever played, Mass Effect 2, we fired up a new game and put the TV on mute. The verdict? WELL IT SEEMS TO MAKE THE SAME SOUNDS AS BEFORE, just much quieter all around." So if it makes the same sounds then how is it quieter?!?
Just to let you all know if you bought a 360 recently from Best Buy and purchased their extended warranty they allow you to trade it in for store credit that you can use towards the new one. They give you the same amount you paid for it but it still has to be under their extended warranty. Might be worth looking into...
Seriously, for those who don't have a 360 yet, this is a fantastic deal. I know a lot of my friends' biggest complaint about the 360 (outside of the red rings) was the huge cost of a wireless adapter, and this new slim gives that to you and so much more for around the same cost.
Now is time to wait for PS3 price down, ahahahahh i love console wars !
I traded in my worn out controllers and videocard-freezing Arcade system and got me one of these. Hah, GameStop! I GOT YOU.
I am an Xbox owner X's 2 with a repair on each one. I am totally ashamed of the fact that I have spent WAY too much money to be ripped of by a company that is laughing at the american people. The Japanese are smart they know the Xbox is a toaster transformer tho. Why would any1 buy more than 2 of these beautifully expensive flower pots. If it looks like a 360 (kinda) it smells like a 360 and sounds like a 360 well damnit it is another way Microsoft can sucker more stupid ass Americans like ME! I refuse to buy more garbage from this company involving consoles.
