The lights are on
Yes, actually. While last week's announcement of the new Xbox 360 slim promised much needed changed to the console, many were left wondering if the system really was more quiet than the current model. Today we received a brand new one and popped in a few games to find out.
Starting with one of the loudest games we've ever played, Mass Effect 2, we fired up a new game and put the TV on mute. The verdict? Well it seems to make the same sounds as before, just much quieter all around. Getting really close to the unit, I could hear the system making it's normal searching and seeking sounds but thanks to the new optical drive and fan system, it's not really an issue. It really is a big difference. And for good measure, the disc version of Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and the Damned was thrown in as well with the same results.
While the amount of decibels a console makes might not really be a reason to buy or not to buy, many Xbox 360s in the wild are either dead or dying thanks to the red ring of death. While we cannot say that these new ones wont suffer the same fate, we can say they pack in all of the good stuff that used to cost more like 802.11N WiFi, a 250GB HDD and more USB ports than you can shake your fist at.

I might get a Xbox 360 Slim but, i dont know, like the rest of you guys have said that it might not be such as a good idea to geet one so i am going to get Xbox 360 Elite xD
well when you use a bigger fan, it can oscillate at lower speeds, thus quieter. It's really a no brainer. Still hasn't stopped reports of overheating cropping up though.
I don't remember how loud the original 360 is since I haven't owned one in years, but this thing sounds like a jet engine. It's night and day compared to my truly whisper-quiet PS3 that I can barely hear. That being said, it's nice to have a 360 again.
might decide to get one of these when they come packaged with natal (i refuse to refer to it as kinect, lol) cuz my xbox is on its last legs
I'm definitely getting this Xbox. I've been holding out on purchasing a new one for a while once my old one died due to the bane of gamers known as the Red Ringed Death.
Yea, I'm 100% sold on this hardware upgrade. This is the 360 it should have been to begin with... welcome to the quality console hardware game, fellas.
i don't know, i just don't know. i'm pretty happy with my PS3 right now, and there's a huge (and ever-growing) list of games i haven't played for it yet. maybe sometime in the future, but not anytime real soon. gotta save up for a 3DS baby!
Have they fixed the RROD yet? I wouldn't mind playing my 360 without the fear of it just quitting on me.
I'm still amazed at myself, that I spent almost a hundred bucks on a freaking wifi adapter
You guys don't have to worry about a RROD on the new 360. Microsoft put a system in place that automatically shuts down the new 360 when it starts to overheat (when the power light stops flashing, it's safe to turn it on again). So the new 360 won't overheat to the point of causing damage to the console now. No more RROD.
Anyway, I traded in my old 360 and I've got a pre-order on a new one. I think I'll wait until Microsoft gives the details on their other packages and bundles before I pick one up, though.
I do want one for those xbox only games, however I will wait till the fall when they release the $199 version. I'm interested to see what they decide to take out of the less expensive version.
I'm thinking about buying the Kinetic/Slim package, but I really don't want to spend another $400. Hopefully, there will be some Christmas sales and deals in store and online.
now its as nice as a ps3 in looks and sound... no i am not dissing...
i just hate playing my 360 at night when my family goes to sleep (i am a father and that is the only time i get to play) and they complain not of the tv volume but the 360 noise it makes!
stupid but true... that shouldn't be the reason i am limited in playing at night...
hell yeah its alot quieter, plus i never bought the wifi so thats a step up, i lost the last xbox in mid june when some idiot spilled a beer on mine so the free upgrade was great
With the 250 GB HD and built-in Wi-Fi, I believe this is definately worth trading in your old 360 for. I have just one question though, what does 'Kinect ready' mean? Can you not utilize the device with the older models?
When I upgrade at christmas... I'll probably buy one of these bundles.
I'm just going to stick with my current model until it breaks. Oh and because the newer ones have more opened vents would it be more prone to getting dust in the hardware? That's the rumors I've heard at least.
