Sims 3 Console-Exclusive Karma Powers Explained

Sims need no introduction, you already know the deal. The life simulator has made countless appearances on PCs and has become one of the best known franchises in the world. Now EA is bringing Sims 3 to consoles making this the franchise's first jump into HD. During the EA booth tour, reps shared details with us regarding the console-exclusive Karma system.

Sims 3 will grant players Karma powers that can change the way other Sims respond to you. In one example, we're shown a male avatar named Hunter who is interested in talking to a female Sim, Tara, at a party. To clear out the male competition, Hunter uses the Cosmic Curse Karma power on another male to clear him out of the room. The curse makes that Sim unappealing as he suddenly becomes gassy and rushes to the bathroom making it clear to talk to Tara.

Tara isn't entirely impressed by Hunter so he uses the Get Lucky Karma power and suddenly she's drawn to him as if he had bathed in Axe body spray. He's irresistable. They WooHoo it up. The pair go upstairs and have..."a nice long talk."

Hunter wants everyone to leave the party at this point so he uses Earthquake to clear the room as all the Sims scatter in fear. To further drive them away, we then see Fire Storm, which triggers a meteor shower. One person at the presentation asked if you could cause an oil spill. Too soon?

Sims 3 will be available on 360, PS3, Wii and DS. A 3DS version is also in the works. The Nintendo versions will be designed differently to accommodate the controls. You'll get a chance to "play with life" this October.

  • The last console version of a Sims game I played on a console was the Playstation 2 port of Sims 2, if I remember correctly.  I loved how you could take control of a single sim, opposed to controling multiple sims from an isometric viewpoint.

However, I do have to admit I prefer playing any Sims game on a PC, it just feels more comfortable to me.  But I'm sure this will do well for console gamers.

  • Looks interesting. Played this game on the DS and liked it, but I tend to agree with Bioshocker... Sims does not feel right on a console.
  • maybe get this, but still unsure.

  • Maybe I'll get it, not sure, but God what lengths is this guy going to go to to get lucky. I've heard some crazy things but this is extreme.

  • Lol, doing a BP.

  • The pair go upstairs and have..."a nice long talk."

    Lol.

  • Well, I wanted to avoid The Sims 3 altogether, knowing how so much time would slip away. I played The Sims 2 on PC, and I know my rig can't run TS3. With it coming to PS3, I have no more excuses, I have to rely on pure willpower. At least on the console versions, there's usually some form of story that lets me 'beat' the game, giving me a small window of opportunity to pry myself away from the game and continue with my life. After seeing EA's knockout press conference, I reversed all my inhibitions on getting this game. Well done.

  • I know all of this sounds really silly, but it might be just what the Sims needs to draw in people such as myself; the gamers that played SimCity not to watch their city prosper but to cackle maniacally as it burned to the ground -while being flooded in a hurricane- and ravaged by tornadoes. Ahhh, good times.

If anything can make the process of killing my Sim more enjoyable (it really is the most fun I've ever had with the series) I'm all for it.

  • Finally it comes to consoles. I hate playing games on the PC.

  • Awesome, time to get rejected by girls in a virtual world now too!

  • wow karma powers why not magical powers? Why not leave the sims to the PC were it belongs
  • that sounds a bit funny you have you admit

  • sounds kinda cool

  • Isn't the rule or karma that it comes full circle. I understand you being able to use them in your favor, but do bad thing happen to you later on because you used those powers?
  • Rofl... a "get lucky" special ability huh...? If it were an inventory item I think that would be refered to as "Rufies"

  • It's about time Sims is on a console(PS3)

  • I this will probably be worth buyin I think I'll get it

  • This game is a classic for the PC, but it'll be interesting seeing it transferred over to a console.

  • have it for ipod fun but not maany posibiltes with ipod
