Metal Gear Solid: Rising Gameplay Unveiled

by Joe Juba on Jun 14, 2010 at 08:24 AM

After teasing Metal Gear Solid: Rising last year with only a title and a picture of Raiden, Microsoft finally showed the game in action at its press conference.

The footage opens in a dark futuristic factory as a gun-armed robot hunts for its target, Raiden. Since the game will be set before Metal Gear Solid 4, Raiden is still an awesome cyborg ninja, so a single robot doesn't stand much of a chance. Of course, Raiden gets the drop of the machine, swiftly cutting it to pieces and tearing out its glowing blue spine.

The video then cut to real-time gameplay, revealing Rising to be a third-person action game. Raiden performs acrobatic jumps and electrified sword slashes, but the most exciting element is the cutting mechanic. It looks as though Raiden will be able to precisely slash through just about anything, including the environment and enemies. It won't just be pre-determined slices, though; the player can determine the angle of Raiden's strike, and the target will fall apart accordingly. The footage showed Raiden cutting a whole van in half, performing multiple slashes on an airborne enemy, and (following Kojima Productions' tradition of including something silly in its trailers) cutting up a watermelon into several wedges. Interspersed in the trailer were the phrases "cut," "cut at will," and "cut what you will," just in case the point wasn't emphasized enough already.

Interestingly, the footage of Metal Gear Rising came before the announcement that the remaining games at the press conference are all Xbox 360 exclusive. Maybe we'll see even more of Raiden tomorrow at Sony's press conference?
