Call of Duty: Black Ops Impressions

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jun 14, 2010 at 08:20 AM

Microsoft just debuted Call of Duty: Black Ops, and we've got impressions from the show floor.

In case you missed it, Microsoft just finished demoing Call of Duty: Black Ops, which is being developed by Treyarch. In the first segment, the player crawled through a tunnel with another soldier leading the way. The segment showcased the lighting engine; the environment was lit only by the flashlights the soldiers were carrying, and the snail's pace they were moving heightened the sense of claustrophobia. As the two soldiers made their way to a corner, an enemy jumped out and ambushed the NPC soldier, stabbing him as the player began frantically taking shots. It's hard to tell how moments like this will compare to Modern Warfare 2's monumental set pieces, but the crowd enjoyed it.

The demo then jumped to a segment in which the player  was riding in a helicopter through the jungle. Incoming fire was ringing out from all directions, as the helicopter swayed from side to side to avoid enemy rockets. The player had his own mini arsenal at hand though, which proved Black Ops won't lacking in explosive moments. The player proceeded to blow up half the jungle, exploding every jungle hut in sight.

We won't know how Black Ops will stack up to other titles in the Call of Duty franchise until we get a chance to try it out ourselves, but the demo looked promising. COD fans can check out Call of Duty: Black Ops this November, check back later in the week for more detailed impressions.
