PSA: PSN Isn't Broken, Just Undergoing Maintenance

If you're having problems with your PS3 today, don't worry: We're not experiencing another ApocalyPS3, the PlayStation Network is just undergoing regularly scheduled maintenance.

Sony made the announcement on the official PlayStation Blog, stating maintenance began at 8:00am Pacific, and will continue until 8:30pm. During this time players won't have access to the PlayStation Store or Account Management, and may also have problems logging on to PSN. If you're completely beside yourself with this development, you can get a constant stream of updates on the situation via @PlayStation on Twitter. Stay strong, gentle readers...we'll make it through this.

  • More maintenance is better. Thanks.

  • Luckily a friend told me about this a few days ago, so I wasn't very shocked. Actually if you haven't logged off from playing online yet you can continue to play, but if you quit the game you can't get back in. I think this only applies to games that require servers like Killzone or LBP, me and another friend are going to try to play RE5 and see if it works.

EDIT: Yup, if your still on PSN direct player to player games like RE5 work, we just started story mode on Professional using the starting pistols and no inf. ammo... we didn't get very far. :)
  • Won't bother me much, I'll be too busy at work to log on.

  • I am glad they do maintenance...it keeps the PSN on point.

  • Lol that's funny, when we foobar the network/servers at work we telll our user base we are performing maintenance as well.

  • At least SONY cares about their product.

  • sweet glad this is going on while I am at work

  • Who cares, Xbox Live is up and running.

  • Mod

Do they not send out a message to all users before they do something like this?  I don't own a PS3 so I don't even know if that's possible.  Microsoft does for scheduled LIVE maintenance but there have been plenty of unscheduled down times as well.

  • Ahh man, now I can't download the new game that came out today, kinda like LBP and Trials combined. Sorry forgot the name.

Anyways hopefully it is to make the PSN a little better and not change the paint job on it.

  • maintenance is good

  • ♪We shall overcome♫

  • Maybe this is preparation for something in the future?
  • Ah fanboys. This has happened on Live; MS does just as much upkeep, and likewise has had its share of unannounced outages.

This doesn't prove or disprove the quality or "caring" of Sony or MS, this is something that happens with all such networks (just ask your WoW friends).

Sorry "the system is down," but don't let lead you into some sort of pathological state of denial wherein system outages make Sony either better or worse than anyone else.

At any rate I'm AFX for another week or so on vacation.

  • Doh, guess I won't be doing any online Lost Planet 2 tonight.

  • So...they're implementing the pay-version of the PSN now? LOL

  • @akbirdman

    Thank you!!!

    @fanboys

Every system has to undergo maintenance in order for it to continue to function properly depending on the issue at hand it may take a few minutes or a couple of hours. Anyone who has played an MMO before should know that servers go down for maintenance and updates quite a few times a month.

As for letting players know Microsoft if I am not mistaken sends out messages to its users. Sony talks to players via their blog and their twitter site. For those that didn't know Sony said there was going to be maintenance yesterday.

  • All day? Meh wasnt gona use my PS3 anyway.

  • me too

  • Cool. Let's hope we get some kick-ass updates in the near future.
