Lord of the Rings Online Goes Free-To-Play

Turbine sends word this morning that its flagship MMO, The Lord of the Rings Online, will move to a free-with-microtransactions model this fall. This should come as a surprise to nobody, as the company tripled its revenue from Dungeons & Dragons Online when it made the same transition last year.

LOTRO will follow a similar model to the one DDO adopted in its free-to-play rebirth. Turbine says that players will be able to follow the story all the way to the level cap without spending a dime, and plans to offer ancillary enhancements and metagame fluff through the cash shop. By dropping a few bills, you can get access to more character slots, cosmetic enhancements, expanded content, and consumables.

As in DDO, players can purchase a traditional monthly subscription for "VIP" access. This gains you a slew of perks, including unlocking all bonus expanded content and a monthly stipend of points to spend in the cash shop above and beyond your VIP goodies.

The Lord of the Rings Online wasn't a smash success, but it reviewed well and never suffered the massive churn that depopulated Age of Conan and Warhammer Online scant months after launch. As much as it pains me to see anything that gives gameplay benefits available for cash money, including seemingly innocuous stuff like experience-boosting or downtime-reducing potions, I can't fault Turbine for making a bold move to breathe new life into an aging game.

  • This bothers me a bit. I think the free-to-play model is an inherently flawed MMO design. I hope the other big MMOs don't follow this pattern.

  • Yea, F2P for "real" games is garbage... it immediately turns it into... a non-real(?) game. Games are supposed to be a show of skill... not your willingness to open your wallet, for goodness sake.

  • maybe i'll play this but then again there is a slim chance of me wanting to play an MMO actually

  • thats cool, I never had a problem with paying $10 a month though. I also agree with you gameinformer paying for little items of accessories that effect gameplay is really dumb. But this VIP package sounds better, I might do that.
Anyways if this helps LOTRO make more money thats good! I think Turbine has done an excellent job making a fun MMO while being as faithful as possible to text.
  • This has become a shock to me, I thought this game will never in a million years be free-to-play.

  • Awesome, I'm broke and I would love to play this for free. If I don't have to spend a dime, then I wont spend a dime.

  • Interesting. Maybe sounds too good to be true? maybe not.

  • It seems as though a lot of MMOs are coming free these days.

  • Now WoW needs to go to Free-to-play, so I wont be broke anymore.

  • That's great in my opinion. I love the game, but I could never play past the free trial because I'm broke all the time. Can't afford the monthly subscription to XBL, WoW, AND LOTRO at the same time. Especially when I have bills... And other console games to grab. Haha.

  • Rock and *** roll! I sporadically play this game, they are always throwing me a free week or two any way, i just have extreme game ADD anyway. I've gotten about halfway to lvl cap just messing with free weekends anyway. Bring on the Free to Play!

  • XD!!!!

YES! i gave this up because i couldn't afford it, now i will definitely get back into it

  • This is awesome!!! The only MMO i play now is DDO online because its f2p and i couldn't afford the WOW subscriptions with a house and a kid. I hope they do like DDO and allow you to get coins at the store via in game accomplishments. I hope more MMO's follow suit and do the same thing.

  • The idea itself seems solid. If you just want to play the game, its free. If you want to play the game with all the bonuses and extra stuff, you can pay a monthly fee (like every other MMO). If you want to play the game for free, but only want to buy specific game enhancements, you can do that too. You have 3 options, dunno how anyone could have a problem with this.

If you're gonna PvP you'll probably want to pay a monthly fee though so you can get access to special items, but if you just want to explore what the game has to offer, its free. I don't see how this could be any fairer for the consumer.

  • nice

  • im kinda surprised this happend, i thought that maybe the choice to pay a certain amount of cash to play forever without another bill would have worked out for this game, maybe the community just wasnt big enough

  • Wow, you can play til cap free? It's cool that I could decide if I like it based off more than an extremely limiting trial. I can't imagine its good for business unless the paid-for stuff really is worth it.

  • this = awesome. I played the trial, but didn't really feel inclined to pay to play. Now I can experience all the content and decide if I want to pay for the extras. Good move.
