Multiplayer Coming In Mass Effect 3?

BioWare has proven its a master of single-player RPGs, but a new job posting on EA's official site indicates that the developer's Montreal-based office is preparing to branch out into multiplayer, possibly with the third installment of Mass Effect.

The posting (which you can view here) is for a multiplayer programmer at BioWare's relatively new Montreal studio. While the first two Mass Effect titles were developed at BioWare's Edmonton offices, it wouldn't be the first time that another studio has handled a major title's multiplayer component.

Initially, the intro paragraph of the posting singled out Mass Effect as one of BioWare Montreal's projects, but now simply reads "We are working on BioWare's top franchises."  The posting also points out that experience with the Unreal engine is a plus, which also happens to be the tech under Mass Effect's hood. While none of these elements are conclusive evidence, it is still exciting to speculate about the direction of BioWare's epic sci-fi franchise.

  • Don't do it Bioware!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Mass effect was one of the few strictly single player games out there. Why Bioware? WHY?

  • Could be cool, as long as it doesn't detract from the single player experience. If Edmonton sticks with the single player and Montreal does multiplayer separately, I think it could be a good thing.

  • Not sure if I should be excited about this news...

  • If it's anything other than story-based co-op, it's already an epic fail.

It would be nice to play spin-off co-op stories for the likes of Legion and Garrus, but on just the other hand it would be awful to play "me too" competitive multiplayer with a Mass Effect skin.
  • PLease BIOWARE don't do multi it's the only single player A grade game on the market please don't do multi

  • What could they posibly do with multiplayer?

  • Co-op would be nice if it didn't change the story.

  • dum

  • Please make it co-op multiplayer. I would love to help out a friend on my 2nd playthrough or an insanity playthrough. You could choose to play as one of the 2 characters your friend selects, and maybe some extra co-op game mode.

However, I am open to the possibility that my favorite developer has some really good ideas for competitive multiplayer. I dont see it, but who knows. BIOWARE ROCKS!

Also I want a patch for the original games adding this capability. I'll pay. But in the end the story is by far what I care about most in this series so I dont really care too much as long as ME3 story is as epic as the ME1 story.
  • Unless other players can take the roll of one of your squad members, I don't need mutliplayer for this game. Of course guns and a cover system are two keys to making a mutiplayer experience, but I agree with most of the fans out there. Just focus on making single player AWESOME!
  • I don't know, this could be interesting. I'd have to learn more about this, since Bioware games are pretty much never bad, to make a decision on whether it's gonna suck or not.

  • don't do it, as i and many others have said. DON'T DO IT!!!!!

  • I could see Dragon Age, but not Mass Effect.

  • They need to just leave it alone. Nothing but respect for Bioware, but this might screw the whole thing up.

  • I love mass effect. It is probably one of my favorite universes to explore and immerse myself in. If they bring multiplayer into the experience, I would probably never put the game down. I already have three current saves going in ME2 and if they give me a reliable multiplayer experience i might never touch another game ever again. As long as they keep the story remarkable as always, I will definitely back them up on it.
  • over 120 comments about this on ign.com step your game up gameinformer. ima start going to them for news

  • I'd rather have them keep it single player, or throw in some co op missions.  I really don't see a reason to add multiplayer to this game.  And heck, if they wanted to do multiplayer(Even though I don't want them to) why don't you just let DICE handle that as well.  They seem to do it the best.

  • I doubt it will work.  I don't see myself playing a multiplayer version of Mass Effect.  Now coop or an MMO maybe but pvp stuff would be crappy like Lost Planet.

  • Its a bittersweet moment
