Mass Effect Movie Rights Picked Up

by Matthew Kato on May 25, 2010 at 04:20 AM

On the eve of the release of the Prince of Persia movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, news comes down that Mass Effect has been picked up by Legendary Pictures.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that Legendary Pictures (co-producing such films as 300 and The Dark Knight) has picked up the rights to make a movie on the Mass Effect franchise, with BioWare co-founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka serving as executive producers along with the game franchise's executive producer Casey Hudson. The film is still in the very early stages, and Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) has been approached to write the movie.

One of the its producers, Avi Arad, is the founder of Marvel Studios, and as such has an extensive background in producing comic book films. Arad sees great potential in a Mass Effect movie, saying the game is "a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. The story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together." Arad also has plans to work on the Uncharted and Infamous films.

With its myriad worlds and alien races, Mass Effect would be a challenge to bring to the silver screen, but the strong Command Shepard would also be an easy character to center on.
