Blog Herding: Editor And Reader Picks 05/20/10

by Annette Gonzalez on May 20, 2010 at 01:30 PM

Every Thursday we highlight both editor and reader blogs worth your undivided attention. Now's the time to get blogging! Check out our picks this week and then get writing. Maybe your posts will appear in a future herd.

When Music Attacks
"From Guitar Hero to Space Channel 5, music games are often about the music first. They’re fun because they allow you to interact with established music tied to static, preset gameplay.  Beat Hazard takes the opposite approach; though it’s undeniably a music game, it’s about music interacting with dynamic gameplay rather than vice versa." Spoiler: Phil likes this game. A lot.

My Thoughts On The EA Online Pass

"So let me get this straight, beginning with Tiger Woods 2011 (June 8th, 2010) if I buy a used EA Sports game at GameStop, or rent one through gamefly, I am no longer able to play that game online? I have to shell out another $10 just to be able to play online with some friends? Who the hell do you think you are EA?" GIO community member Renegade2K is not exactly tickled about the idea of having to pay extra for online play. What are your thoughts on the Online Pass? Share some words in the post's comment section.

GIO member o_JMan240_o breaks down the costs of gaming these days in relation to other mediums and also shares his own thoughts on the Online Pass.

Save Our Helicopters: A Plea To Developers
"Helicopters are one of the most fragile of man’s creations, second only to red barrels. At least, that’s what video games would have us believe. I’ve been on a gaming spree lately, playing good stuff (Splinter Cell: Conviction), not so good stuff (Secret Service), and some in-between stuff (Gears of War 2). I couldn’t help but notice that in the past month, I’ve played no less than six games that have had a variation on the following scene..." We're not going to blow Jeff Cork's entire blog in the herding space. Check out his post for the most over-used, tired, cliché helicopter scenario of all time.

Poké Posts
Seems like Pokémon has been a hot topic in the blog space this past week. I'm surprised there weren't any posts from folks complaining about the new starters in Black and White [Fact: they're adorable. Or at least I think so. -Ed.] In "Pokémon: Gotta Play Them All (And I Did, Most of Them)" GIO community member OmegaSpartan08 geeks out on the Pokémon series, revisits each one and shares fond memories. In other Poké-related business, in "In a Pokémon World," the JKer insane tells us what the world would be like if we co-existed with the pocket monsters. It would be a much better place.

A Night To Forget In Red Dead Redemption

"Nick spent a good portion of his time trapped in a canyon. Darnel ran me over with a stagecoach. Adam drowned in a lake. Almost everything we attempted ended in tragedy." Reiner and co. jump into a Red Dead multiplayer match without first learning the basics in single-player. Big mistake. Check out the gang's experience.

Ranking The Final Fantasy Battle Themes
GI community member jpow11 does just that. Check out the sound clips then make your own list.

You And Your Subwoofer
In the latest entry of Nick's TechNick blog series, he teaches us how to get the best bass out of subwoofers. For those of you who like a good pound to your sound (yes, that was a cheezy line) check out his post. [Note: Subwoofer is one of my favorite words. -Ed.]

The Future Business Model Of Video Games
"In what I believe to be an attempt at cutting cost and controlling their products, I foresee a future of gaming in where we no longer own games, but rent them. Now, some of you might thing I'm insane, but hear me out." Hear him out! GIO member Anthony Cortes plays fortune teller and tells us where he thinks the industry is headed and how it will affect our pocketbooks. Do you agree with his argument?
