Nintendo DS To Surpass PS2 Units Sold

by Tim Turi on May 13, 2010 at 01:40 PM

For some time now the PlayStation 2 has held the mantle of best-selling video game hardware ever. As of last September the PS2 weighed in at over 140 million units sold. According to NPD analysts, however, that reign may be coming to an end compliments of the Nintendo DS.

Since its launch in 2004, the Nintendo DS has enjoyed massive success across four versions of the handheld. As of last March the DS has shipped nearly 130 million units, making it barely in reach of the PS2.

"The NDS is approaching the PS2 as the best-selling hardware system of all time, and by October or November of this year, it should meet or exceed the install base of the PS2," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Though DS sales for April 2010 were down 71 percent from April 2009, the portable device’s 440,800 units sold still greatly surpassed the PS3, 360, PSP, and Wii. The decline in April’s DS sales may be attributed to the launch of the DSi last April.

This comes along with another analyst's prediction that the 3DS will sell 5 million units by March 2011. As it stands, it doesn't look like Nintendo has to fret loosing its stranglehold on the portable gaming market anytime soon.
