Nintendo DS To Surpass PS2 Units Sold

For some time now the PlayStation 2 has held the mantle of best-selling video game hardware ever. As of last September the PS2 weighed in at over 140 million units sold. According to NPD analysts, however, that reign may be coming to an end compliments of the Nintendo DS.

Since its launch in 2004, the Nintendo DS has enjoyed massive success across four versions of the handheld. As of last March the DS has shipped nearly 130 million units, making it barely in reach of the PS2.

"The NDS is approaching the PS2 as the best-selling hardware system of all time, and by October or November of this year, it should meet or exceed the install base of the PS2," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Though DS sales for April 2010 were down 71 percent from April 2009, the portable device’s 440,800 units sold still greatly surpassed the PS3, 360, PSP, and Wii. The decline in April’s DS sales may be attributed to the launch of the DSi last April.

This comes along with another analyst's prediction that the 3DS will sell 5 million units by March 2011. As it stands, it doesn't look like Nintendo has to fret loosing its stranglehold on the portable gaming market anytime soon.

  • Wow. That's something.

  • The DS is awesome, but the PS2 is just as good.

  • No you're something!
  • despite all the PS2 has sold i can actually believe the DS will surpass the PS2.

  • And I guess this success has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the fact that each new version adds enough features to be considered a new console?

  • You're comparing apples to oranges here.  Also, PS2's popularity has died down significantly due to the launch of the PS3, Xbox 360 & Nintendo's Wii while the Nintendo DS is still relevant & popular while still only having ONE competitor which is Sony's PSP.

It's great that the Nintendo DS is doing well & is sorta expected especially with Pokemon & Mario exclusives & some Final Fantasy relaunches.

  • Noooooooooooooooos!

  • @ Steve Win

nobodies comparing anything to anything, they are are just listing sales data...

I keep telling you Steve, stop getting high and then getting on the internet

  • But there have been 4 different ds models and lots of people have bought at least two models and some  bought 3 so it us a little unfair to say it is catching up plus some households buy more than one ds so they don't have to share but people usually have 1 ps2 at most.

  • Why is Nintendo so super successful with products that are (in terms of technology) inferior to their competitors? I guess that says something about what people really want out of their video games. It seems that people don't want the best technology around. They just want games that are fun.

Oh well. Im a fan of Sony and I think (IN MY OPINION) they've got the best systems around. (Once again, MY opinion. And no I'm not a fanboy!)

  • soon, nintendo will be making more history!

    interesting...

  • @Linebacker

People bought a PS2 Slim after already buying a PS2, and the PS2 had all the DVD drive problems, so it's not unreasonable to say that a lot of people probably did buy 2 or 3 PS2s.

  • dang people really love their Dual Screens

  • 3DS will probably in the future surplass all those. Its how it goes, Nintendo gots MAXIMUM POWA

  • Who cares? Really? They're two completely different animals. Console obsolescence is a much faster occurring process. They don't even have PS2 games on display at my Game Stop anymore. Plus, Nintendo has been launching and relaunching the DS for years now. There have only been two PS2 models. If you told me that sales of the original DS and the DS Lite together were about to pas PS2 then I might be impressed, but I don't think it's fair to compare the two because there were only two iterations of the PS2 and Sony didn't treat the PS2 Slim like it was a completely different system.

How much of the DS figure is hype-sales thanks to reintroducing the system in a new wrapper? Not taking that into account is like comparing XBox 360 sales to PS3 and Wii sales without putting an asterisk next to it mentioning that a good number of those sales are replacing systems that failed.
  • I really like both the ds and the ps2.

  • BUT! The DS has so many freaking different types It doesnt count! You cant call the original DS and a DSi the same, one has two cameras one blatently doesnt. One plays GBA games one doesnt. How are these the same thing. AND DONT! tell me the PS2 has a slim version, it does all the same things a Fat PS2 does.

  • Day-um. That's a lotta DSes.

  • billy mays needs to shut the hell up, hes dead. . .  dead people shouldnt talk

  • Billy Mays is dead?
