Marvel's Kid-Friendly Super Hero Squad Getting An MMO

Evildoers, beware! The Super Hero Squad is staking out the MMO space with a new game, Super Hero Squad Online. The PC game, based on kid-friendly versions of Marvel's famous heroes, is being developed by Gazillion Entertainment. The two companies signed a 10-year exclusive agreement last April, and this will be the first game released under that publishing deal. You might remember Gazillion from their work on the upcoming Lego MMO, Lego Universe.

Unlike many MMOs based on licensed characters, players won't be relegated to the sidelines with their created characters. “In Super Hero Squad Online you are not a nameless sidekick," says Jay Minn, the game's creative director. "You’ll swing through Super Hero City as Spider-Man or zap the bad guys with Cyclops’ optic blasts in high-voltage missions. Or you can just hang out in a high-energy, immersive world filled with other Marvel fans!”

Players won't be missing out on customization though, even if they don't have a chance to create a new hero from scratch. The game features player-specific headquarters that can be tweaked and upgraded as their heroes clean up the streets of Super Hero City and Villainville. (Remember, this is a game for younger players.)

  • why? i would much prefer a Lego Marvel game. see pic below:

  • I can expect we won't delve into Tony Stark's drinking problem in this game...

  • I've actually seen this show before and, believe it or not, it has some kinda funny moments in it. (i.e. Dr. Doom asleep on his throne wearing a snuggy).  Not getting the game though.

  • will have to wait and see

  • andt hey couldntjust make an adult marvel MMO? i would rather see Civil War than *** Kid Spidey teaching kids how to stay out of trouble

  • @ Cpt Slippery
Yeah, that's a good point. They should've just done a regular Marvel MMO. I'd run around the game as Toad.
  • I'm all for kids getting into gaming, but not with an MMO. I'm sure it will be toned down, but the whole formula promotes massive amounts of time and general over-indulgence.

I wouldn't want my younger siblings to get sucked into the MMO abyss...

  • This game gets props for including Nova.

  • No. Just no. Some things should never be created. Such as Super Hero Squad at all. The only thing I ever enjoyed about the Super Hero Squad was this Spider-Man figure :guidestobuy.com/.../41D1uq3sfBL.jpg. I bought it and glued it to my hood on my car. I have Spider-Man as a hood ornament. I'm that cool.

  • Seems like it wonk be all that great. If I were to play an MMO for the younger audiences, I would go with Lego Universe over this any day.

  • I hate life....

  • if this is an mmo directed toward like 7-14 year olds... I'll pass
  • Just think of the job market for little kids looking to support a $15 a month game addiction. Bring back child labor. LOL Seriously though, I know there are kids playing WoW, but in comparison to adults it's a small margin. And a game that is relying on all kids to pay a monthly fee? I mean who here seriously is going to play this outside of maybe a beta invite? I agree they should just come out with a *** Marvel MMO for us.

  • Cool, I like this.

  • Eyros, great point. Business is business, though, right? Get 'em while they're young so they don't know any better as they move into an age with their own income :P

  • I'm sure Tim Turi will be all over this.

  • that art style looks pretty ill ...

  • I'm seeing a lot of people whining about how they just want to see a regular Marvel MMO for adults, and about how this game doesn't appeal to them.

Guess what, folks.  This game isn't -supposed- to appeal to you.

It's a game. for. kids.  It is specifically intended to be an MMO which will be played by younger children for whom the regular MMO environments in which we play might not be particularly suitable.

If you feel as if this game doesn't appeal to you, congratulations, it means you're a grown-up -- or, at least as close to it as you're ever going to get.

  • @ Eyros -- That's where good parenting skills come into play.  Chances are, you can expect to find some kind of Parental Control feature implemented in this game.  Parents will probably have to set up the accounts for their children in the first place, and so they'll likely be given the opportunity to establish hours during which their children can play and/or set limits to the amount of time which may be spent playing.

Mind you, there will certainly be parents who don't give a rat's behind, and they'll likely allow their children to set up the accounts themselves, and probably play as much as they want.  That these children might fall into MMO hell is regrettable, but if the parents aren't going to...you know...parent...it's unavoidable.

  • This looks like an awesome game for kids. But I would never get it. lol
