Epic Games: Unreal Engine 4 Is The Best Engine You've Never Seen

Epic president Mike Capps shocked the world by touting his company's product in a recent interview with the UK's Edge magazine. The developer has been at work on Unreal Engine 4 since 2003, and expects to hit the ground running on the next console generation with a new iteration of its engine.

"I think the jump to next generation’s going to be another really big one, which is great for tech guys," Capps told Edge. "Most likely, you’re not going to want to make that massive investment yourself, you’re going to look to come to a company like Epic."

Capps also declines to worry in the face of Crytek's entrance into the middleware market. "They’ve yet to ship an Xbox 360 game and we’re five years in. It surprises me that people take them seriously as a crossplatform engine company," he said. "We don’t know how to compete against a company that hasn’t shipped yet."

With how ubiquitous Unreal Engine 3 has been this console generation, it's a little scary to think that Epic could be in an even stronger position in the next round ("More and better dominance!" as Capps puts it). Having one company so deeply entwined in the development of such a large proportion of the games on the market is a little terrifying. At the same time, we as gamers have undoubtedly gotten better games over the last few years as developers have to worry less about tools and technology and can spend more time on gameplay and design.

So, if they have it ready for the next console generation, does that mean a new generation of consoles are being worked on now? I really doubt they're going to sit on this technology for the next 5 years.

I have personally seen a recent version of Crysis 2 playing on a PS3 and this guy is talking out of his ass. Epic should be scared....very scared.

@ Colton- Way ahead of you man. I think Microsoft would be most likely to make a move systemwise at this point. With them losing ground due to the victory of Blu-Ray in the HD war, I could see them coming out with a new system earlier. And like I said earlier, you don't create an engine like this only to sit on it for 5 years.

Wow, what a -blam- I love me some Unreal Engine 3. Hands down the best tool set I've ever used so I'm excited for the next iteration. But that attitude says to me as a consumer that Capps is arrogant and his team must not be trying very hard since they feel they're already on top.

hey Unreal Engine 4 is much powerfull than Unreal Engine 3, so that means that we have to wait for the next Playstation and Xbox systems, because PS3 and XBOX360 cannot run Unreal Engine 4 at full power. The only system that can run this beauty is the PC.

played Gears 1 years ago, skipped 2, and before 3 is released i would have not only played 1 over and played 2 but read the books and graphic novels. i want to be prepared for Gears of War 3. i KNOW it will be magnificent.
