EA Unveils Online Pass Program, Online Play Requires Code

EA Sports announced today a new program called the EA Sports Online Pass. In simple terms, the Online Pass is a one-time registration code that must be entered by the user in order to play EA Sports games online. Once the code is entered, you will have access to online multiplayer, online dynasty modes, and well as promised “bonus additional content”. The upcoming Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 will be the first EA Sports title to use the Online Pass program. All future EA Sports titles will follow suit. Tiger 11’s first announced bonus content is a special, advanced driver available only to those who redeem an Online Pass code.

If you plan on buying your game new at retail, your experience should be pretty much unchanged, save for the slight hassle of having to enter a code before going online. However, the key phrase here is “one-time” registration code. After a retail copy of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is entered, it cannot be used again. So, if you buy a used copy of the game, you’ll have to buy another Online Pass for $10. In the press release, EA announced that prominent used game retailer GameStop [Game Informer’s parent company – Ed.] will sell Online Pass cards for $10. This new program will also affect gamers who rent games from services like GameFly. Again, once a code is used, it cannot be used again. So, unless you are lucky enough to rent or purchase a copy of the game that has an unredeemed code, you’ll be shelling out another $10 if you want online play. Each game has an individual code – a code you got from a copy of Tiger Woods cannot be used for a copy of Madden.

In his blog, EA Sports president Peter Moore called the Online Pass “an important inflection point in our business because it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhance premium online services to the entire robust EA Sports online community.”

However, in an interview now posted on the EA Sports site, Andrew Wilson, senior vice president of worldwide development was more direct: “In order to continue to enhance the online experiences that are attracting nearly five million connected game sessions a day, again, we think it’s fair to get paid for the services we provide and to reserve these online services for people who pay EA to access them,” commented Wilson.

A representative for EA Sports informed us that the Online Pass would only be available for EA Sports titles on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

  • Ridiculous. I'm glad I don't play sports game and I hope this doesn't spread.

  • Huh, sounds like fail to me. What happens if I want a new PSN ID?

  • Wow could this idea get any stupider...yes i think it could.

  • simply stupid idea. sigh it will fail in the long run.

  • I understand why they are doing this but I think it sucks.

  • If Peter Moore's involved then you know... Ah, screw it, I'm too worn out to think of something witty so I'll just straight up say it: Peter Moore is a tool. Like, huge. I also wouldn't mind fighting him one day.
  • that's stupid... i doubt they'll see profit on the online codes and their online community dwindle

  • I don't have any EA Sports games I don't think I will be getting one anytime soon but I don't like this, especially the extra $10.

  • Another attempt by software developers to cut into the profits of used game sellers.  While i'll be happy to see stores like Game Stop go, this is also a blow to private sellers(Craigslist, Ebay, ect) who grow tired of their games and choose to sell them.

Besides, i'll take NBA 2k over Live any day.  This would be a great opportunity for 2k sports to ressurect NFL 2k, and stick it to Madden/EA.

  • so do you need a online pass for each game or all EA games??

@Matt- thanks for clarifying, guess that was stupid of me lol
  • @ Demon of Elru

I believe that Mass Effect 2 was the first game to do this, so unfortunately, it looks like it is spreading.

  • THIS IS JUST STUPID EA SPORTS IS JUST TRYING TO MAKE THIER ONLINE LOOK SO PRETTY AND EXCLUSIVE BUT ITS NOT ANYWAY MOST OF ITS SPORTS GAMES SUK ANYWAY

  • Staff

    @therook -

each game code is for that game only. i clarified that by adding a sentence at the end of paragraph 2.

so, yep, a tiger code only works for your copy of tiger. if you bought a code after the fact for $10, it would only work for 1 individual game, not all ea sports games.

  • *facepalm*

  • This is completely ridiculous.

  • Screw DRM, this is getting ridiculous. Why not just put the code on the disk and it registers when you insert the game the first time? This is going to eliminate the ability to buy used games. I shouldn't have to pay more to play a game on an online service I already payed for with a game that I already payed for.

  • Yea...here's another reason I don't play EA games.

  • Mod

Good thing I don't play sports games.

  • Sounds like a EA lawyers v Gamefly lawyers Battle Royale in the making. Available pay-per-view through EA/Gamefly.

  • complete stupidity, guess im sticking with my madden 10 for a while
