Activision Blizzard: PS3 Will Beat 360 In 2010

by Adam Biessener on May 07, 2010 at 08:56 AM

The mega-publisher believes that the PlayStation 3 will move a million more units than the Xbox 360 in calendar year 2010, according to its first quarter fiscal results. Activision Blizzard's internal estimates put the PS3 at 9 million sales compared to the 360's 8 million, though it still sees the Wii handily out-selling both at 12 million on the year.

The splits of which market segments made the company the most money this quarter is fascinating. PlayStation 3 GAAP [Generally Accepted Accounting Practices] revenue was $304 million and 23% of the total, not far back from Xbox 360's $384 million and 29%.  Wii sales accounted for only $136 million and 11%.

The MMO side (read: World of Warcraft) of its revenues dropped by $8 million to $306 million, and is now responsible for 24% all on its own. The company also expects "significant risks and uncertainties" due to the ongoing situation with WoW in China, where the government has imposed serious hurdles to the continued operation of the service.

Whatever problems may arise down the road from the Infinity Ward fiasco, the publisher is in good shape for the moment. The company's Q1 2010 statement touted record profits, pointing to continued strong sales of Modern Warfare 2 and its Stimulus Package DLC among others.
