Resident Evil 5 Producer Not Doing RE 6

by Tim Turi on May 06, 2010 at 07:31 AM

As the mastermind behind Resident Evil 5 (and more recently, Lost Planet 2), Jun Takeuchi had a very tough act to follow considering Resident Evil 4's massive success. Today word has surfaced that Takeuchi doesn’t want to “deal” with the series for about four years.

Takeuchi spoke with Xbox World 360 Magazine about making RE 5, stating that he felt “extreme pressure” following the footsteps of Shinji Mikami, creator of RE 4.

Yes, it's true we did feel extreme pressure - and Mikami-san's shadow - after Resi 4," said Takeuchi. "However, because we were creating the sequel to this huge franchise we wanted to make our fresh direction clear."

"Personally, I don't think I'm gonna deal with Resident Evil 6 at all,” he continued. ”As far as the series is concerned I'm not planning to return until at least two more Olympics have passed!"

To be clear, this doesn't mean that there won't be another Resident Evil game within four years, it simply means someone else will produce it. Takeuchi's departure from the series will come as sad news to those who loved RE 5, but fans craving a new direction for the series should be intrigued by the possibilities.

In addition to Mikami, Hiroyuki Kobayashi also helped craft Resident Evil 4. As of now Kobayashi is working on an unannounced project at Capcom. Fans worried that the series may be mishandled by a producer unfamiliar to the series can hold out hope that it's Kobayashi working on RE 6.
