UPDATE: MMO-Champion has pulled the images from its Cataclysm alpha leak article. Hopefully Blizzard releases real info sooner than later.

ORIGINAL STORY: The lid has been blown off of the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm friends & family alpha. WoW news site MMO-Champion has an enormous infodump on the expansion: everything from new profession recipes to tons of screenshots from Azeroth's many retooled zones and datamined models of the new friends and foes that populate the shattered world.

How did the alpha leak? Who knows. The information is out there now, and no force in the world could stop hordes of ravenous gamers from consuming the lot of it. The screenshots are of unpopulated zones (meaning they were probably taken from a leaked alpha client, not from the live alpha servers), but what a beautiful world it is. Ragnaros' Throne of Flame commands the finally open Mount Hyjal area. Enterprising goblins have set up a...mini golf course? Yep, that's a golf course in Azshara. Stormwind got owned harder than the time clever griefers trained Lord Kazzak there. Orgrimmar is looking decidedly more Garrosh and less Thrall.

If Blizzard doesn't kick off beta soon, I might explode.

Worth noting that after a flurry of posts on the Blizzard forum, they're now cracking down and deleting threads that speak of this.

Odd, considering the MMO guy emphasized he was allowed to post this.

It figures that the expansion to the most popular MMORPG of all time would leak huge goblets of data before it could even get to beta. Is there any surprise in this?

The two main things I am excited about:

1. They said they were going to mess with the water, both presentation wise and interaction wise, and if you ask me, doesn't the water seem a bit crisper?

2. THOUSAND NEEDLES IS UNDERWATER! YES! YES! YES! GONE FOREVER ARE YE VILE BEAST! YES!

Never got into WoW. The trial was a turnoff. Everyone says it gets good at higher levels (ex. 50+) but why would I waste my time to get there if I'll be bored the entire time? And why would I pay someone for their account or to power level me? That's why I love Guild Wars.

Sounds interesting. However I quit after raiding myself to boredom in the first expansion. Hope Blizzard stops after this and pumps out an old school WC RPG.
