Netflix On Wii Gets Nearly A Million Users

Nintendo may have been the last of the three console manufacturers to get Netflix instant streaming running on their system, but if the latest numbers are to be believed, they're doing quite well with it.

Speaking to CNBC (via Yahoo Finance), Nintendo of America COO Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that "almost 1 million Wii users have 'participated' in the Netflix streaming system so far." This is after the service officially launched less than a month ago on April 12. Comparatively, Yahoo Finance points out that it took three months to get a million Netflix instant view users on Xbox 360.

Do you want to know the joy that all these Wii-owning Netflix users are experiencing without having to own a Wii yourself? Check out Tim Turi's powerful first look at the Wii Netflix disc.

  • I should probably check this out.

  • i love my wii. though i miss the revolution. way better.

  • No.

  • When I'm downstairs at my house I use Netflix on my nice big HD tv. In my room, though, I have a crappy little tv so I plug my Wii into it and use Netflix through that when I'm in there. It's a nice little system I've got going.

  • well if you pay 9 dollars a month wouldnt you want netflix instantly streamed on as many tv's as possible like me?

  • wii users are [ussies! and there are millions ofthem that's all!

  • i need to sign up for net flix already...

in my town all the blockbusters and hollywoods shut down due to no one renting anymore... netflix is like the monopoly of the movie rental bizz

  • If only Netflix would get on the ball with BETTER movies. They started to release newer (eg: movies created in the last 10 years) but they dipped off into releasing 80's and 90's B-movies again. I've been paying Netflix for years now.. and since WI was added to the Xbox, used it more than I ever have.

Only good thing about it thus far have been the TV shows added. Rewatched all of Law and Order: SVU seasons, rewatched all of CSI, watched new shows like Leverage, Prison Break (never got into it when it was on air.) and ZOMGGGG. THEY PUT UP ALL 9 SEASONS OF XFILES. Which oddly, I have physical and digital copies of already but that doesn't stop me from watching again! :D

I just want Netflix to add better movies. Can only deal for so long with movies like "Killer Clowns from Outerspace" (which gave me nightmares of clowns as a kid...)

  • @Jordan

I think there are restrictions on what new movies they can stream (Don't want to cut into potential physical disc sales? Piracy fears? Grrrrr, technology scary and businessman still figuring out this snazzy betamax cassette VCR?), but yeah, they do need to get on the ball with newer movies on the streaming service.

At least I can stream episodes of Coupling while I'm waiting for the disc of a newer movie to come in the mail (and have you seen the multi-episode Monty Python documentary you can stream? I just found that and watched the first episode this weekend and it's awesome!)
  • No Lie....As Soon As I Heard That Netflix Was Raedy To Be For The Wii. I Jumped Into It. I Can Watch Movies Anytime I Want For The 360 And PS3 So Playing Movies On The Wii Was A Huge Step.

  • Sh*t....i got netflix on my xbox, ps3, and wii.  Netflix kicks ***.

  • I just got the disk. Don't know if we'll use it since we have it on ps3

  • Yeap, when I get myself a nice brand new CRT TV, and get my 56k back up and running, I'll enjoy some beautiful standard def television on the Wii.

  • I still say Xbox did it right with you not having to do a *** thing other than scroll to Netflix and you're in. The whole streaming disc thing is a pain in the ass. But Netflix is friggin awesome. Blockbuster got pwned...

  • If Netflix were smart, they would have gone after the Wii a lot earlier instead of wasting their time with the 360.

  • interesting

  • I like having netflix on my wii.

  • Wow they have finally got netfix on the wii

  • FINALY NETFLIX FOR THE WII. I CAN JUST WATCH MOVIES WENEVER I WANT

  • It's nice to see the Wii getting all this success with Netflix, congrats Nintendo!

Now all we need is HD thrown in there, but obviously, Reggie doesn't think we need it ;)
