The lights are on
2002's Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries has maintained a multiplayer following far longer than most games, and is now being given away for free as a gesture of goodwill. With publisher Microsoft's blessing, the stewards of the multi scene at Mektek.net have made Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries available as a free download.
Originally released as a standalone expansion for Mechwarrior 4, Mercenaries offers multiplayer giant mech action as well as a story-driven campaign with three possible endings. Whichever mode you pick, the point of the game is to customize your war machine with whatever parts you can get your hands on, and then use it to blow the hell out of everything in explosive third-person action gameplay.
Does this mean that we're going to start finally hearing more about Mechwarrior 5? We can hope. In the meantime, hey, free game!
Meh, I'll stick with Front Mission for gaming consoles. My PC isn't up to par to play the more "current" games. But I guess this is still a good deal for others.
Free games are always a plus. Never actually heard of this game, but it doesn't look too bad actually...
Tamas - you do know that the game is 10 years old now right? So any PC you've got will probably run it (unless you're on something like a DX4/100).
Really stoked about this - just need to wait until my datacap resents.
Reading over the comments here and I see a lot of people say they haven't played this and then reference the Mechassult games on the XBox. Just a little FYI, this game is nothing like the MA games. This is more like a mech-simulator. None the less still very cool. I remember when this was new and it may hold up. I'll have to wait and see.
Like Scott said, this game is pretty old so it should be able to run on most modern rigs. If you like the Front Mission games I suggest you check this out. =)
Figures. Microsoft offers something for free and it doesn't work. That MTX thing takes forever to load (it will stop responding for at least ten minutes afterwards) and when you try to install the game you get an error message about the servers being overloaded. Right, so I can get into the Reach beta with no trouble but I'm expected to believe that at the same time, everyone's downloading some obscure Xbox title from 2002? I call bull on that one. Whatever, I wasn't too interested anyway. Deleting MTX right now.
WHHOOAAAA!! Game onnnnnn.
Only if my computer runs this thing.
ya MTX was in development for like 9 months and it doesnt work.. i can't even get the program to start! nvm get to the point where it tells me there are server issues. i can deal with a week wait to get the servers up and running. they had 10,000 simultantious downloads and 100,000 in the first four hours, so it was inevitable. maybe they should be fixing MTX too :/
Not sure if it's worth the price
