Super Mario Galaxy 2 To Feature Nod To Super Mario Sunshine?

It may be one of the more polarizing entries in the Mario franchise, but a new video hints at Galaxy 2 areas that seem directly inspired by 2002's Super Mario Sunshine. It clearly shows a Pianta (the race of island-dwellers that Sunshine introduced), as well as a tropical environment reminiscent of parts of Isle Delfino.

The clip below only features about 15 seconds of actual gameplay, but keep an eye out for some fancy swinging action thanks to Yoshi's tongue. At least he's not vomiting fruit juice all over the place this time around. Poor fella must have seen a doctor about that condition sometime in the last eight years.

Keep your eyes peeled for a Super Mario Sunshine edition of Replay in the near future.

  • Wow....Just 15 seconds?, I Really Really can't wait for this game.

  • I completely hated Super Mario Sunshine. It just bored the hell out of me. I really hope this doesn't take any of the gameplay aspects from Sunshine. The overworld was kinda cool though.

  • interesting.

  • Why did they make the video so long that annoys me.

  • super mario sunshine gave me a bad feeling. it is the only mario game i honest hate.

  • i'm excited for this game... i better go beat the first galaxy before this comes out

  • awesome! can't wait for the SMS replay that game was a classic

  • I loved sunshine this is cool to hear.

  • I loved Sunshine for the hubworld and the jetpacks, which isn't really a part of Galaxy 2 oh well.

  • Sunshine was second best to Mario 64 I think. So to combine that one with this new title sounds great!

  • neat

  • I am so psyched for this game.. Now bring on the Super Mario Sunshine sequel, please..!

  • this game is but awesome! trippy

  • I loved Super Mario Sunshine! Where the f--- did FLOOD go?! I loved cleaning the city. Go figure a video game makes cleaning fun. (I_I)

  • great! i loved Sunshine

  • That was a lame teaser, I want this game now!

  • Woooo-weeeee, look at all of that fancy tongue-action!  But seriously, why make the video that long if there is only a mere 15 seconds of actual gameplay footage?

Also looking forward to that episode of Replay :)

  • I hope they bring back FLUDD, that thing was actually really cool.

  • Mario Sunshine wasn't a bad game - just a bad/horrible Mario game. There were no question blocks, no fire flowers, no memorable themes; it might as well not have been part of the Mario franchise at all. Let alone the fact that it wasn't a radical leap beyond Mario 64's design in any way. In many ways, it's noticeably worse (a worse camera, the lack of visual variety, the limiting world design, the horrible and forgettable boss fights, etc.).

But now that it's out there and we can't take it away, it's officially part of the Mario universe. Might as well revisit some of it's stuff. I wouldn't mind the FLUDD being used as a powerup, honestly - just don't hinge a whole game on it again.

Though, there's no way its weirdness will ever fit in with the rest of the property as well as Mario 2's Shy Guys and Birdos ended up doing. At least it had that ONE cool sequence where you fought mecha bowser on the roller coaster. Though I'm not ashamed to admit that it's the only Mario game ever that I traded back in after beating it. When Nintendo inevitably re-releases Sunshine digitally for 15 bucks - perhaps for the launch of their next system? -, I'll probably pick it up again though.

  • cool! i can't wait for this i'll defenetly buy this game
