New Yakuza Spin-Off Coming To PSP In Japan

by Joe Juba on Apr 21, 2010 at 01:45 PM

While North American gamers have only had a few weeks to dig into Yakuza 3, the series is already much further along in Japan. Not only is Yakuza 4 already available across the Pacific, but series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi is already talking about an upcoming PSP spin-off.

The project, originally revealed under the working title "Project K," will be the first handheld game in series. Set in the fictitious city of Kamurocho, Project K (which will likely be renamed before release) will star an 18-year-old named Tatsuya Ukyou. A new main character isn't the only departure for the PSP title; it is being developed by a different team from the console entries and will feature as-yet-unrevealed elements that cater to the portability of the handheld.

Despite lackluster sales in North America, the Yakuza series has a following of loyal fans who adore its fusion of brawling and open-world gameplay. The franchise is also extremely popular in Japan, consistently racking up impressive sales numbers. Project K is currently only scheduled for release in Japan...and considering the last spin-off in the series, Kenzan!, never made it to our shores, it may be a while before you're playing this one.
