Sony Leapfrogs Microsoft With PSN Updates

Sony says that in May, releases such as DLC, updates, and add-on content will appear on the PlayStation Store Tuesday instead of Thursday. This move forward puts it at more on a level playing field with competitors Microsoft and Nintendo.

Sony's previous Thursday release date put it at a disadvantage to XBLA since 360 fans would get their DLC, Rock Band songs, etc. on Tuesday or Wednesday (depending on the content), with Sony playing second fiddle later in the week. Starting with the May 4th update, however, Sony fans can now get their DLC, PS3 updates, and other content on time with everyone else. For its part, Nintendo goes on Monday, but that's probably less of a competition with the other platforms, since we don't imagine there is a lot of DLC that cross-pollinates and competes among all three.

Sony's move puts it ahead of Microsoft, and it will be interesting to see if the company responds in any way to grab the semi-exclusive advantage it used to enjoy.

  • I never really had a problem with getting new content on Thursday. It was usually the day before payday, meaning funds were going to be available soon.

However Tuesday will work well too.

  • This is nice. It's gonna be sweet getting stuff earlier than usual.

  • wait.. what is on the new DLC again?

  • What's the difference of a few days, more or less? Was every person who happened to have both 360 and PS3 buying two copies of every game, but buying DLC that comes out first? People are going to buy DLC for the platform they play most on, and a few days isn't going to change much.

  • Its about time Sony's psn steps up to the plate! The PlayStation 3 has a lot of potential, the built in wireless and free online is a great way to get people to buy DLC. They should start adding ps2 titles for download and maybe drop prices all around.

  • Thats cool, it's really no difference, but it's one less stupid reason the XBOX people can give to try to prove their system better

  • I have a rule, but it's really more of a guideline: If it's on both systems, I get it on Xbox 360. I got my PS3 for its exclusives and that's basically all I plan to play on it. Most of my friends have Xbox 360 and they do the same thing, so even if the game isn't multiplayer, it's fun to compare scores, like the combat challenges in Batman Arkham Asylum or Trials HD.
  • @Ulrich:  In general, DLC would be released on tuesday for the 360.  Then the following Thursday, it would be avaiable on PSN.  Now, Sony is moving their update day to Tuesday to be on-par with Live.

I don't understand why Sony chose Thursday as their update day.  Tuesdays have generally been a release day for all types of media (including dvds, cds, and games).  It only makes sense to make them available when the company releases them for purchase.

  • Cool I can get stuff two days earlier

  • its nice that sony moved up the new content day but I dont really think it matters. People will buy when they can for they system they play on.

  • Well this wasn't a big deal to me, I would prefer to see cross chat sony, but this really is a good step forward.  I wonder if this means that we will now get home updates on Tuesday also, that will be nice also.

  • Well, this is good that the playing field has been leveled - at least in one respect. For me, never been a huge deal... other than MW2 I have never been THAT eager to get my hands on anything on launch date... and if I do, I still wait until the weekend to really start playing anyhow.

  • Awesome. I love getting things early.

  • PlayStation FTW!!!

  • meh i was used to thursday. as it was day before friday but hey change can be good.=

  • I never had a problem with it but thats pretty cool.

  • to imply that a move that puts it on a level playing field puts it ahead is kind of stupid. seeing as mircrosoft still gets dlc months in advance. the most recent example being the stimulus package. i really do not see how that move really puts sony ahead more than it helps them close the gap... marginally

  • Cool , though Thursdays never really bothered me .

  • more power to ya, Sony

  • Mod

About damned time.  The rare times updates were on Tuesday due to holidays on Thursday I always wondered why not make all updates on Tuesday regardless.
