‘Apocalypse Now’ Game In Development?

Secrets are tough to keep these days, which is something that Killspace Entertainment is keenly aware of today. The studio, which comprises various Pandemic Studios, Red 5 and EALA veterans, was revealed after a bit of sleuthing from Web site Superannuation. In addition to having its existence unceremoniously announced by a third party, it seems as though the identity of at least one of Killspace’s projects was blown, too.

According to Joystiq, two domain names were registered by Killspace, including ApocalypseNowGame.com. Uh oh. Killspace’s agency, Digital Development Management says that of the two games the company is working on, one is a licensed IP. It seems likely that Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam epic “Apocalypse Now” is that game.

While basing a game on such a well-known and respected film seems a bit odd, it won’t be the first time that a classic story gets a faithful and mature adaptation. Remember Dante’s Inferno? Never mind.

Expect to see an official announcement in the near future as the various companies involved scramble to get the leaked info back on message. We’ll keep you posted.

  • They're treading on sacred ground here, I don't want another Resevoir Dogs the game.

  • Wish EA would stay away from the licensed properties.

  • i don't know if i like this.  actually, i'm pretty sure i don't.  maybe they'll have a surfing minigame.  avoid mortar fire while catching some waves.  could be hilarious for all the wrong reasons.

  • Nope... not a good idea.

  • I wish gaming would leave classic movies and classic literature alone--they generally do not translate well to gaming media.  These works have a set lines and roles and timing and when you try to push it all into a video game it gets lost in translation.

It will probably being something like "call of duty-vietnam" and lose all of the psychological madness that is going on and its correlation to heart of darkness.

But I've already played Snake Eater...

  • ah no! This is a very bad idea

  • When I think 'Apocalypse Now' I think, "That's a brand with mass media potential! It really speaks to me, the target demographic." Online multiplayer CTF! Cheat codes! Achievements! In-game cross-promotion with exclusive Godfather game unlockables! Apocalypse Now: The Game Burger King Kid's Meals with toy! Three new promotional Mountain Dew Flavors: Kurtz, Willard and Kilgore that all taste like purple urine!
  • Didn't really like the movie, so don't have high hopes for the game.

  • I loved the movie.  But why?

  • does it really have the potential for a game? I mean I ended up enjoying the godfather games despite them not being faithful to the films but was this movie really explosive enough to constitute an entire game?

A great movie based on a fantastic novella, both of which hardly translate to video games. Spec Ops was smart and decided to simply crib the concept without trying to mimic the plot. Why not just make your own Vietnam game?

  • Not going to end well but whatever.

  • Dear God,

Please let this game be more like The Godfather video game, and a lot less like The Godfather Part II video game. :0

  • Anything could happen but I don't have high hopes if this turns out to be true. I imagine it'll be like when I watched my cousin playing The Godfather games. I thought to myself, "Wow. I could just as easily watch the movie and have a better time."

  • It could be awesome, but I think just making a game set in vietnam would make more sense since there are not that many

  • Apocalypse Now is not the kind of war story to make into a game without shaming the name and going away from the story. I don't see what kind of game they could make from the story that wouldn't suck gameplay wise. Would we get to drop acid and cruise down the river in a boat? Next you know they are gonna make a game out of Deliverence (which will have it's own Hot Coffee-style mod called "Squeal Like a Pig").

Nice to see the lack of originality and creativity in Hollywood is beginning to infect the game industry. The only thing worse than the idea of an Apocalypse Now game is a remake of the movie.

  • the concept sounds cool enuff, just wonderin how theyll pull it off, cuz the main character didnt get much action in the movie

if they scrap the movie script in its almost entirety and make a 1st/3rdPS based (losely) on events from the movie, i can dig it (seein as to the debacle of Activision/IW has me boycottin their nam game)

and dont forget Apocalypse Now's theme was based heavily on Heart of Darkness (if u read it, u'd remember)

  • If they make a game based on the Heart of Darkness novel I imagine it could become epic and push the parameters of what a game can be. However if based solely on the movie, the player controlling a character who is predominantly standing on a boat, I don't think it would have half as much the potential. But who knows? Maybe a good 'Nam game will finally come out soon.

  • i think they should just make it mortal kombat style! i always wanted to play as a bald marlon brando whose fatality is ritual decapitation, or a traumatized playboy playmate with a parrot fireball!
