Saw II Is Coming, Fans Of Torture Porn Rejoice

by Dan Ryckert on Apr 09, 2010 at 06:00 AM

The last 10 years have inexplicably seen the rise in popularity of "torture porn" movies - series like Saw and Hostel that are short on plot and heavy on wince-inducing gore. When Konami brought the latter franchise to the gaming world last year, it seemed like an odd choice. Considering that the films featured little more than a sadist placing victims in torture devices, it didn't seem terribly conducive to compelling gameplay. As many expected, the game turned out to be mediocre at best. Despite the lukewarm reaction to the first, Konami is hoping you'll wince along for another installment when Saw II releases for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

From the gameplay demo on display at Konami Gamers Night, it seems that the title will be heavy on puzzles and minigames. Escaping your imminent doom will involve solving brain-teasers in a certain number of moves or a certain amount of time, and will sometimes require releasing other victims rather than yourself. One particularly gruesome scene revolved around slowly knifing through a stitched-up wound underneath your eyeball in an effort to release a key.

While the idea of popping a key out of your eye may not sound like a terribly compelling gameplay experience, this brand of entertainment has been successful enough to give us six (soon to be seven) installments of the film series. If minigames and gore sound like a good combo to you, it might be worth checking out Saw II when it releases this fall.
