Heavy Rain Has Sold A Million Copies

by Joe Juba on Apr 09, 2010 at 08:05 AM

Heavy Rain director David Cage has revealed that Quantic Dream's cinematic thriller has sold over a million copies worldwide. While that figure may not be as impressive as a title like God of War (which put up those numbers in a couple days) it is still a major victory for the game and developer Quantic Dream.

“We have sold more than 1 million copies of Heavy Rain worldwide,” Cage said in an interview with play3.de (translated via VG247). “That was a surprise to many, since estimated sales were between 200,000 to 300,000 units. We estimate that by the end of the year, we will have sold 1.5 million copies, and are very pleased with the reception.”

Part of what makes the sales so impressive is the fact that Heavy Rain isn't your typical game. It experiments with unconventional storytelling and gameplay mechanics, and therefore ran the risk of not finding a large audience. “Our game isn’t an action game, it’s not a role-playing game, [and] it’s not an adventure. It isn’t in any one genre. When you create a new, convention-busting game to the market, it’s always a risk, both for the developer and the publisher.”

Thankfully, the risk paid off; with this kind of success, we hope to be seeing more titles in the vein of Heavy Rain in the not-too-distant future.
