Monolith Not Developing F.E.A.R. 3, John Carpenter Involved

Many F.E.A.R. 3 murmurings popped up over the past few weeks. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive officially announced the game. Big changes are in store for the franchise, but adding co-op and enlisting help from horror experts should get fans excited.

Monolith, the developer responsible for previous F.E.A.R. titles, is handing sequel duties over to Day 1 Studios, which is best known for MechAssault. This isn't the first time the studio has dabbled in horror; Day 1 worked closely with Monolith on the console port of the original F.E.A.R. title. The studio plans to evolve the franchise while keeping the signature frights. “Players can look forward to new features such as divergent co-op, an evolved cover system, and more scares in F.E.A.R. 3,” said Day 1 founder and president Denny Thorley.

F.E.A.R. 3's unique new co-op mode features Alma’s sons. Players control Point Man, the genetically augmented ultra soldier protagonist from the original F.E.A.R., in the the single-player campaign and co-op. The other co-op teammate is the sketchy Paxton Fettel,  Point Man's brother whom he killed in the first game. Fettel's telekinetic powers have granted him “life beyond the grave,” according to Warner Bros.

News that John Carpenter and Steve Niles are helping on the game should come as a pleasant surprise to horror fans. John Carpenter – the legendary director responsible for Halloween and The Thing – is lending a hand with the game’s cinematics. Steve Niles – creator of 30 Days of Night – is using his talents to ensure gamers needs a new pair of pants following playing F.E.A.R. 3. Day 1 Studios is clearly taking the scares seriously, and we can’t wait to see the end product.

F.E.A.R. 3 is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this fall. Be sure to check out our extensive preview coverage of F.E.A.R.3 in the May issue of Game Informer.
