Kojima Sees A Future Without Consoles

by Joe Juba on Apr 07, 2010 at 09:01 AM

Hideo Kojima and his Metal Gear series are major players in the gaming world, which is why some people may be surprised at his vision for the future of the industry. Speaking at an event for his studio's upcoming PSP title, MGS: Peace Walker, Kojima explained his belief that consoles are on the way out.

"In the near future, we'll have games that don't depend on any platform," Kojima said. "Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel – wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience"

With more publishers looking at digital distribution options and new technology on the horizon, it doesn't seem impossible that consoles will be phased out at some point in the future...though how soon that could happen is another question. Kojima seems to think the transition could happen soon; when speaking about the development of a Peace Walker, he said, "I looked at this in part as an experiment aimed at the future."
