Asteroid Record From 1982 Broken

by Meagan Marie on Apr 06, 2010 at 06:19 AM

In a marathon session that started early Saturday morning and drew to a close just last night, John McAllister broke the standing world record for Asteroids on the classic 1979 Atari arcade cabinet. A locksmith from Seattle, McAllister defeated prior champion Scott Safran, who set the world record back in 1982 with 41,336,440 points. McAllister won with a score of 41,338,740.

How did he go about this monumental task? McAllister’s weekend marathon was punctuated with short breaks when he left the fate of his ship to happenstance in order to eat, drink, or use the restroom. We assume the sleep deprivation was worth it, however, as once video game authority Twin Galaxies reviews the tapes, McAllister will go down in the record books as having toppled a 28 year old record.

A single quarter for a lasting legacy? Not a bad deal.
