Blog Herding: Editor And Reader Picks 4/01

by Annette Gonzalez on Apr 01, 2010 at 01:30 PM

Every Thursday we highlight both editor and reader blogs worth your undivided attention. Now's the time to get blogging! Check out our picks this week and then get writing. Maybe your posts will appear in a future herd.

Could Gamers Save The World?
"We are faced with grave problems in our world today. Poverty, world hunger, disease, pollution to name a few of them. If we would have the same inspiration to save our own planet as in our favorite games, maybe we could change things." GIO community member Psychedub Massive Crew explores how skills used in video games could be used to make the world a better place.

The Achievement Debacle
"When dissected as 'meta games,' achievements can make a game better just as much as they can damage a game’s experience. I’ve already detailed my Do’s and Don’ts for achievements, but one thing that I haven’t talked about is how they can affect player behavior." Reiner details his achievement war against Gearbox Software's president Randy Pitchford. He also discusses how achievement farming can impact your experience with a game, for better or worse.

PAX East 2010
"So this past weekend was PAX East. The first time PAX came to the east coast. Sadly, I only had a Friday pass, but I was able to see and try most of what was there." GIO community member Forsberg documents his experience at PAX East in Boston.

Oh Well...It's Tim Turi #2: Dance Party Edition
Dan's desk is located next to Tim's in the office, which makes Tim a target for posts like this. Dan reviewed Dead or Alive: Paradise this week (check out his other blog post where he Photoshops the ladies of DoA into strange scenarios) and played some of the game's music for Mr. Turi. As a result, Tim proceeds to dance...for two whole minutes. Check out the post for the full video.

Did You Know ____ Also Voiced For _____
GIO community member MosPhat highlights characters from the Halo and Modern Warfare series, plus Final Fantasy XIII, lists their voice actors and adds other works they have appeared in that you might not have known about.

CosBlog #25: Faith Connors By Benny Lee
This marks the 25th week of CosBlog, and in this edition Meagan posts her greatest find yet. Check out the amazing photos for an uncanny resemblance of Faith Connors from Mirror's Edge.

Everything You Need To Know About GLaDOS
GIO community member CaNdLE_LiiGHT breaks down the history of GLaDOS and how she became "the cold, heartless tyrant she truly is."

God Of War Fans: Do Not Read This Comic
"Today, the first issue of the God of War comic came out. I've been curious about it ever since it was announced; as a big fan of the series, I'm interested in the story behind Kratos and his fury. So, naturally, I decided to read the comic to find out more about my favorite Spartan. Guh... what a huge mistake." Why was it such a huge mistake, Joe? Read his post to find out.
