Just Dance Sells More Than Two Million Copies

by Jeff Cork on Mar 31, 2010 at 11:53 AM

Ubisoft today announced that its inexplicably popular Wii game Just Dance has sold through more than 2 million copies worldwide. Since its November release it’s been the best-selling rhythm/music game for the Wii from December through February, besting genre veterans Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Dance Dance Revolution. The game lets up to four players match on-screen dance moves accompanied by more than 30 pop songs from acts such as MC Hammer and the Spice Girls.

“The consumer response to Just Dance has been overwhelming,” said Tony Key, senior vice president sales and marketing at Ubisoft, U.S. “With Just Dance’s success we’ve seen a renewal of the music video game genre, as this is truly a game that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

Critics haven’t enjoyed it quite as much, giving it an average 47 score on Metacritic. Users have been more enthusiastic about the game, giving it an average 7.9 rating on the site.

Just Dance’s success is certainly an example of how easy-to-grasp gameplay can pay off at retail. Other games have offered similar gameplay on the Wii, such as EA’s Boogie, but they obviously never caught on in the same way. Whether Just Dance’s success stems from its tracklist, presentation, or something else, one thing’s for certain: imitators are coming to a store near you very soon.
