Ninja Theory Didn’t Make A Dime On Heavenly Sword

by Tim Turi on Mar 29, 2010 at 09:55 AM

One of the biggest exclusive titles for the PS3 early on was Heavenly Sword. Though the game suffered from some rather wonky Sixaxis controls, it saw a not-terrible critical reception. Ninja Theory, the developer of the game, has revealed that the game resulted in no prosperity.

“It's difficult. Heavenly Sword came out pretty early on the PS3, and we sold, I think, a million and a half copies, and that's still not enough as an independent studio to break even," said Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory co-founder in a chat with CVG.

"The publisher potentially breaks even at that point, but the developers don't," Antoniades said. CVG reveals that it is for this reason that they decided to go multi-platform with Enslaved (be sure to check out our preview on the upcoming game).

"It's just that when so many people have Xbox -- I mean over half the market or more has Xbox 360s -- why limit yourself to one platform?" asked Antoniades.

He poses a good question. When you see a capable developer like Ninja Theory struggling to make any money on a game, what argument does it make for console exclusivity?
