Layoffs Hit Kane & Lynch Developer

by Matthew Kato on Mar 29, 2010 at 07:48 AM

Employee layoffs are an unfortunate occurrence at game studios as head count needs change during the development cycle. Kane & Lynch and Hitman developer IO Interactive has just reportedly shed 35 jobs.

IO Interactive, a Danish studio made up of approximately 200 people, is a studio owned by Square Enix (acquired in the publisher's take over of IO's old master Eidos), and it's currently working on Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. The game is set to release this fall on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, and this move is slightly surprising given that developers usual shed positions after a game is released. However, a Square Enix Europe spokesperson told gamesindustry.biz, "Every studio has to take decisions to ensure it is operating effectively as projects start up and ramp down. IO Interactive has assessed the internal and external resources needed to support its pipeline and this has led to organizational changes which includes the loss of some roles at the studio."

IO Interactive certainly knows its business better than we do, but we hope that these layoffs don't affect Hitman 5, which is also in development at the studio.
