Sony Responds To 3DS, Say Kids Playing 3D Is A “Stretch”

Yesterday Nintendo officially revealed the 3DS, a portable gaming system with glasses-free 3D technology. Their direct competitor in the handheld market, Sony, has responded to the new development. The company is curious to see how this pans out for Nintendo, but has reservations about children playing 3D games.

"Our focus on 3D right now is on the console," said John Koller, Sony’s director of hardware and marketing in a chat with IGN. "There's a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we're going to concentrate our efforts there."

Koller continued, expressing a bit of doubt regarding Nintendo’s plans to put 3D technology in the hands of kids.

"I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable," he added. "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. Eight and nine-year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."

Everyone is sounding off about Nintendo’s 3DS right now, and Game Informer is no exception. Do you think there is a chance that Sony is even a little worried that Nintendo might be onto something?

  • Of course they are worried, Nintendo has always led the gaming industry in innovation and change, and have been rewarded in sales because of it. And to claim only kids us a DS is false, there are several older demographics that enjoy it as well. I think sony is truly worried that their handheld is going to be crushed even further by the 3DS and ultimately make them about as big a factor in the handheld market as the NGage. I am not saying the PSP is terrible, Nintendo just invests alot more into its handhelds and it shows.
  • Haha, Sony is in no position to judge Nintendo's handhelds. Obviously Nintendo is the king of the handheld. I mean, it's hard to take what he says seriously if he's going to say things like "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile..." because no matter how long Sony has "been in the portable space" Nintendo has been there longer and been more successful.

I love my PS3, but it's obvious here Sony is just badmouthing Nintendo's 3D tech to play up their own.

  • Oh and can I add that it's obvious that Sony has its finger on the pulse of the handheld market and is perfectly in tune with what handheld users want, as demonstrated by the unprecedented and overwhelming success of the PSPg— hmm. Never mind.

  • I know what he is talking about.

  • Sony is just trying to deflect some of the acclaim Nintendo is getting right now. Later, they'll make a PSP3D. Just like they copied the Wii controller.

  • I wonder if sony is aware the PSP=Epic Fail. I love you sony but you suck at handhelds, give up before we all hate you for wasting money better invested elsewhere, such as buying a landfill so that PSP go finally has a proper home. Unless you have gone green, we can recycle and use them as coasters.
  • @WS-N:

Me too.  It DOES seem strange to do this with the handheld system in particular.  Especially with the demographic targeted...BUT being that it's Nintendo, it will succeed.

  • He's just pissed that they have even more Nintendo copying to do and not enough resources to rip off everyone else.

  • I'm real curious on how the 3DS is gonna work out for Nintendo. I can understand Sony's doubt on handheld 3D gaming but if it looks and plays well they are gonna regret not doing it. Personally I think its going to be wonkey as hell. Nintendo also needs to stop pumping out new DSs like Apple pumps out new iPods. The DSi XL isn't out yet but they announce something new? weird.

  • I think Nintendo will do a great job. One thing I'm assuming is the fact that, if there's 3D on the PS3, then wouldn't the people need a 3D HDTV? I mean that's a big chunk of change.

But Nintendo doing it on a portable device, the DS, makes it so you only have to buy that. I think Nintendo has the advantage and I'm sure they'll deliver ground breaking things. Like they did when the Wii first came out, then Sony and Microsoft wanted to follow.

Also, imagine a pokemon game being 3D. That would be cool.
  • Oh, Sony is scared to death. There's no doubt about it. Sadly, I think they are waiting for Nintendo to make a few mistakes, however, in which they plan on using to their advantage. Nothing gets people on your product better than pointing out the flaws of your competitions.

@Anthony- Nintendo Wii wasn't the pioneer of motion control. There was the power glove (also by nintendo) for the NES, along with playstation eye toy, Xbox live vision, and light guns. All these are basic versions of motion control
  • wait how is the amount of interest in 3d video games "off the charts"?

they must have some pretty small charts cause everyone I've met doesn't give a crap about gimmicky 3d games or even movies for that matter.

(however I do realize that I only know about 3 people but still.)

  • I love my psp... granted it's running CFW and all I play on it are Game boy advance games via an emulator- wait a minute...

  • Didn't nintendo practically kill them in the handheld space? All this article says is that sony is a little hesitant to start ripping off this tech, and they'd much prefer it that nintendo just falls on their face so they don't have to pull another 'move'.

  • @TheDarkestReign

But you have to think, Nintendo is the first to try the motion control, then sony, then microsoft followed.

  • I'm glad they're not coming right out and bashing it, but they fact they released a statement at all tells me they're at least slightly concerned, as they should be. Nintendo took an off-beat concept and made it extremely successful with the Wii, and my bet is the 3DS will be just as popular.

  • Why is that Sony acts like jerks when they get trumped?

  • Sony is still trying to put in jabs where they can. The fact that Sony is the only one really trying to start an "insult" war shows that they are worried. I really like how Microsoft has kept a voice out of all this, but we'll see how long that lasts.

  • Throughout the years, Sony has capitalized on Nintendo's research and innovation.  This will likely be no different.  Right now, Sony says it's a bad idea to try to keep Nintendo's sales low.  Nintendo will have a rousing success.  Then, a year or two later, Sony will reveal a new 3D handheld system that looks and functions suspiciously like the 3DS and commend Nintendo on its success.  I call it "Mini Move."

  • Nintendo has been a force to reckon with in handheld sales if they manage to pull off this 3D thing they'll rocket even further ahead in that "space". Sony will be sitting back with their mouths gaping. That's IF the 3D succeeds.
