UPDATE: EA Cuts One Starbreeze Studios Project

by Tim Turi on Mar 24, 2010 at 09:23 AM

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Electronic Arts told the L.A. Times that "EA and the Lundlum Estate are still discussing making a game based on the Bourne franchise."

ORIGINAL STORY: Years ago, EA declared it would be taking chances on publishing the games of smaller developers. One such developer is Starbreeze Studios, the creators of The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Today it was revealed that EA ditched one of two titles the Sweden-based developer had in the works.

The two titles that were being developed by Starbreeze included a new Jason Bourne game and a project dubbed “Project RedLime,” which is a codename for the revival of a classic Electronic Arts IP. Concerning the one remaining EA-published title, Starbreeze CEO Johan Kristiansson said that all resources would be devoted to it.

“Our relationship with EA is stronger than ever and the aim now is to spend more resources on the game that demonstrated the greatest potential,” continued Kristiansson. “This game is already in full production.”

There’s no word on which project got the ax, but if I had to guess it would be the Jason Bourne game. Previous games based on the Bourne novels haven’t been very successful. Reinventions of classic games, on the other hand? Everybody loves those.
