Super Mario Galaxy 2 Omits Hub World In Favor Of Traditional World Map

We first speculated on it last month, but now it's confirmed: Super Mario Galaxy 2 will abandon the hub worlds featured in the plumber's other 3D adventures in favor of a traditional world map. Shigeru Miyamoto explains, "You can think of it in terms of something similar to Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where you will have a rather convenient map to navigate."

He continues, "We want players to focus on the joy of the action instead of getting to each game course. We wanted to make it as accessible as possible and as easy as possible for the players. Also because we’re going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars."

How do you feel about this? Were you a fan of the hubs in Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, or are you partial to the more streamlined process featured in Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. Wii?

  • I loved the hub worlds in Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Galaxy.  I thought it added a non-linear feel to the game.  I'll reserve my judgment until I play the game.  I don't think this feature will matter if the gameplay is fantastic.

  • i just want emo peach to come back in this game.

  • I can't really say I prefer one against the other. They both have their pros and cons.

  • I never really minded the HUB system, but sometimes I would get annoyed at the obstacles you had to overcome just to get into a level. I think this will make the game much more enjoyable!

  • They both had the pros and cons, i personally would say, if they were to follow galaxy to take it out.  Mario 64 was genius to jump into picture frames, but the whole going from planet to planet was a bit frustrating figuring out where you were.

  • It curbs the exploration aspect of getting to these worlds which is a shame but it makes revisiting favorite levels such a breeze. I will take it.

  • It's probably a decision most people won't care about.  On the one hand the map is much easier to navigate than the hub world.  However, I liked the interactivity of the hub world.

Either way though, it's the gameplay that really matters.

  • I like them both as long as the gameplay and the levels are still awesome, it really doesn't matter to me.

  • I liked the hub worlds the best.  Kinda gave it a sandbox feel.

  • Hub worlds were great, but as you get into the game more it becomes a chore going back and forth between worlds. Good choice changing it back to the original "world map" style.

  • I liked the way they did it in the first galexy, you did take alot of time trying to get to the different rooms though as in the 64 version.

  • This be old news... and welcomed confirmation. I liked the old maps.

  • Mass Effect Mini, haha.  That's kinda what it looks like to me

  • I loved the old Super Mario World Map.

  • now every mario title is practically exactly alike! Wow! Fantastic Nintendo!

  • I kind of enjoyed the hub worlds.  It was fun to goof around and explore.

  • I don't think I'll mind either way.  Super Mario World is my favorite Mario game, but I also loved the games with hub worlds as well.  I don't think it'll affect my decision to buy the game.

  • I think Sunshine did the hub world the best, but whatever Nintendo thinks is right for us, Ill stick with.

  • I like world map.

  • I like the world map. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is my favorite Wii game by far. Not sure I liked Galaxy..
