Sega Wants To "Sequel-ize" Bayonetta & More

Sega West president Mike Hayes envisions a future for Sega where titles like Bayonetta, Aliens vs. Predator, and Alpha Protocol are turned into sustainable franchises that provide a "core" backbone for the company.

Speaking in an interview with CVG, Hayes talks about the opportunities that a game like Bayonetta can offer the company. "If you think about it, we can sequel-ize Bayonetta, AvP, Alpha Protocol – if we can make a hit of something like Vanquish – then you add that to Football Manager and Virtua Tennis – we actually have a broad portfolio." Earlier in the interview, Hayes pointed out how Alpha Protocol represents a core title in the RPG genre, while AvP covered the shooter base. It remains to be seen exactly where newly minted Platinum Games' title Vanquish (click here for more) fits in Hayes' genre breakdown of Sega's portfolio.

Speaking of Platinum Games, Vanquish represents the fourth and final title of the developer's deal with Sega. If Sega wants to create a sequel to Bayonetta it'll be interesting to see if Platinum and the game's mastermind, Hideki Kamiya, are brought back or if there is a way for Sega to continue on with the franchise without Platinum. As for Kamiya himself, he's recently told Game Informer both that he wouldn't mind a Bayonetta 2, but also that "with Bayonetta, I've gotten action gaming out of my system for a little while. I've gotten everything I wanted to get into the game, so I've worked it out of my system and I'd like to try something new next." Would a Bayonetta game without Kamiya or Platinum be a Bayonetta worth playing?

  • Interesting words. These titles aren't exactly "hits" but they're pretty solid if Sega intends on keeping up with the competition

  • A second Bayonetta would be awesome, but I guess I' appreciate it more if the same team works on it.

  • I would play a Bayonetta sequel...

  • Quite honestly, if Kamiya and Platinum Games isn't coming back for the sequel if they make one, then it'll probably be crap. Cause, I mean, who the *** else do you know that make a game like that? But then again, you never want to judge a developer by it's cover (that's how that saying goes, idn't it?)so if a different dev does end up working on it, as long as they keep the core ideas and don't add stupid ones, then it could be pretty good after all.

  • to be honest i wouldn't have made the first bayonetta crappy voice overs, lines that made me want to rip off my ears and the stupidest enemies i've ever seen in a game why people loved it so much has yet to dawn on me

  • But yeah though man Bayonetta was the ***

  • I've got issues with sequels and prequels and spin-offs done by other studios. Sure, sometimes something good can happen. But I mean... look at the difference between Frank Herbert's Dune books and the new ones his son "co-writes". I mean, the story ideas can be good. But something of the soul is missing.

Same thing with the Conan novels. I love them, but what is good-cheesy from Herbert, comes off as just plain cheesy when its from, oh, L. Sprague DeCamp (not that I don't love them too, just that they aren't quite "the same".)

  • alpha protocol hasnt come out yet and theyre already talking about a sequel, what a shame

  • Will the AvP fanbase stay as loyal as they are if they're having titles pumped at them so much quicker than what they're used to?

  • Probably not

  • i didn't realize sega needed a portfolio.   i mean they've only been around for like 40 years.  but it would be cool to see sequels to those games.  i hope vanquish is a ps3 exclusive.  and i hope they port madworld to ps3 (and every third party game worth a ***)  to playstaion move.  and here i thought game peripharells were dead.  silly me.  i think i'll go out and buy a modem for my intellivision.

  • what? i can't say d a m n... what the frack.

  • More Bayonetta!!!!!!!!

  • the only thing segas good at is making total war games and if im crazy tell me guys mabey try to make a console aagin? lol no thats a terrible idea i was just *** with you i mean thats like saying they should make a duke nukem game lol

  • Eh, I would play a sequel of Bayonetta and Alpha Protocol does intrigue me a bit.  I'm down with this.  It makes sense.  Anything that is even remotely successful these days end up having a sequel.

  • Does Sega own the IP rights, or is it Platinum?

  • I wouldn't mind playing Bayonetta 2. I love Bayonetta, is one of the few games that I've played like 5 times, but Kamiya not coming back? Thats a little bit volatile for the future series I think.

  • Since I've never played any of those games, there's not much else to me to say.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Alpha Protocol sequel granted the first one ends up as good as it sounds. But I think I'm getting ahead of myself.
