UPDATE: Rebellion Faces Staff Cuts For First Time In A Decade?

UPDATE: Today a spokesperson for Rebellion confirmed the previously rumored layoffs for the Aliens Vs. Predator developer and the closure of the studio. The Derby studio is, in fact, shutting down, and an unspecified number of staff in "junior positions" have lost their jobs. We hope for the best for everyone affected by this staff reduction.

ORIGINAL STORY: Rebellion, developer of the recent Alien Vs. Predator title, is reported to be reducing its staff. Up to 20 employees at the Oxford headquarters are said to be losing their jobs, an inside source told Develop.

Back in January Rebellion’s Derby studio was reported to be facing closure, putting the location’s staff on consultancy. At the same time, company CEO Jason Kingsley said “We are very excited about the expansion of our Oxford offices, the home of Aliens vs. Predator. Recruitment is ongoing both in Oxford and Runcorn.” Perhaps the developer is reconsidering their recent expansion after the lukewarm critical reception of Aliens vs. Predator. The game preformed well on the UK charts, but we won’t know how it fared in the U.S. until NPD numbers surface tomorrow.

At the time Kingsley also said “No one has been made redundant by Rebellion in more than a decade.” This talk of Rebellion cuts is still just hearsay, but we’re hoping that they don’t end their 10-plus year employment streak anytime soon.

We've reached out to Rebellion for comment, but they are not issuing official statements at this time. However, they are planning on officially addressing this issue soon, so stay tuned.

  • Too bad, I'm still hoping for AvP DLC thats actually new and not just special edition maps now being released to the public.

  • Maybe because AvP sucked

  • staff cuts, layoffs. Thats all I've been hearing. Very depressing being in a computer science major wanting to go into game design

  • No, I want Sniper Elite 2!

  • thats rough,i really enjoyed that game.

  • That's sad, I hate hearing about job losses

  • Noooo Rebellion made a good game AVP

  • This is all because of GI's poor review. Thanks, Ben, you just cost people their jobs.

This message brought to you by the Clash of the Titans ripoff comment.

  • Hope for the best for all employees cut. Too bad they didn't have the sales they wanted for AVP.

  • Its because of the massive failure AVP was.

  • Anyone know if they are going to bring back Black Hawk Down? and in the fashion of the first. Not Team Sabre (blech

  • Everytime there is a sucky game the company who makes it gets laid off or shot down

  • the predator now hunts for peoples jobs. lol

  • AVP sank faster than a failboat.

  • Weird since the game did a lot better than it should have, or than people though it would. I'm not really "disappointed" since they seem a little cocky for people who made a pretty bad game, especially after one guy from the developer said he "didn't understand" the bad reviews they got.

  • That sucks but if the game is not good enough there will be cuts

  • That sucks but if the game is not good enough there will be cuts

  • So it goes...

  • well i never hated avp but compared to their other games....

  • That sucks. I might not have liked most of their games (I liked Rogue trooper...they made that one right?) but it sucks when people end up losing jobs especially when they were doing their best.
