New Snowblind Developed Lord Of The Rings Game Heading To Consoles, PC

by Andrew Reiner on Mar 18, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Rumors of a new next-gen Lord of the Rings game have been swirling throughout the game industry and internet message boards for months. Today, the rumor mongering comes to an end – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has officially announced The Lord of the Rings: War in the North for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, scheduled to ship in 2011.

This game is not developed as an vehicle to relive Peter Jackson's motion picture trilogy. Developer Snowblind Studios (of Balder's Gate: Dark Alliance fame) is working in conjunction with Middle-earth Enterprises to introduce new lands, characters, and story threads that tie into J.R.R. Tolkien's narrative. Described as a "mature RPG" by Warner Bros., War in the North offers online co-op for up to three players. We're already throwing around the idea of creating a wizard-only party with each player wearing the proper white, gray, and brown cloaks (if they are included in the game).

"This game is a natural evolution of the acclaimed RPG gameplay that Snowblind has consistently delivered over the past years," says Ryan Geithman, founder and studio head of Snowblind. "Players and fans will experience an innovative approach to online co-op gameplay, woven throughout every facet of the game in a way that only Snowblind can deliver." In true Balder's Gate: Dark Alliance fashion, this includes upgradeable weapons, skills, and special attacks.
