Need for Speed Online Beta At the Starting Line

Electronic Arts has begun its beta program for Need for Speed World Online, the PC-only online racing game that's set to release in the fall.

Electronic Arts raised some eyebrows when it announced that it was splintering the Need for Speed series into different console-specific fragments, with the PC version concentrating on online play. Need for Speed World Online is a racing MMO featuring an open world connecting rivals, friends, and the cops in races and chases spanning 150 miles of map. The game, developed by Skate's Black Box, also features what EA is calling "RPG-style progression," but no further details on this front are being disclosed at this time.

With upcoming games like Blur and Test Drive Unlimited 2 merging single- and multiplayer modes more and more, it'll be interesting to see if video game racers are begging for a standalone online racer.

    I'll definitely give it a try, it is a need for speed game y'know.  But I'm really looking forward to Blur, looks really good.

    Sounds really interesting too bad it's not on ps3 , my laptop probably won't run it .

    I want the old school NFS back. All these gimmicks they are attempting haven't been working, although there is always a first time that it might.

    Well I like the idea of having a cop chase similar to something out of a fast and furious movie, And if Black Box is working on it then it has the potential to be good.  

    But I also think ND4SPD has been getting progresivly worse and worse ever since Most Wanted.

    Guess ill just have to wait and see.

    This seem pretty tight, i love racing games and if im thinking of this "RPG-style progression" i might have to check this out. Any one know when the actually beta is going to start? i want to sign up my new computer cause it has better specs then my old computer but its not comming till late April,

    They finally made it!!! OMG! After years of EA promising to bring back or replace Motor City Online, they are finally gonna do it! I didnt think this day would ever come. Im so happy!

    Sounds like EA wants to compete with Test Drive Unlimited 2 since it's supposedly coming out towards the end of the year.

    Eh, I'd rather have a racing game that I can play split-screen with people, and online. So I'm going for Blur and Split/Second.

    I hate playing games on my PC, any game. I just dont think computers have the right atmosphere to play games on

    In my opinion, the last decent NFS title was Carbon..and that was a while ago. Needless to say, I'm skeptical. I loved the old games when I was younger, but their recent games have been unbelievably disappointing. I'll keep an eye on this..but I'm going to be reading any review I can find on it when it comes out before I bother.
