Today's Big News From GDC To NPD

There was a ton of news coming out of the industry today – so much news that you may have missed some. Here is a recap of all the big stories we posted today, with links to each article.

First, we posted fresh screens for upcoming games: Clash of the Titans, Green Day: Rock Band, the Medal of Honor reboot, and the newly-announced remake of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. After reporting on the debut of the PlayStation Move last night, we posted some hands-on impressions of the first games to use the motion controller, including SOCOM 4. We followed it up with screens of each game: Move Party, Motion Fighter, The Shoot, and Sports Champions. We also posted a more detailed look at the Move's tech, and interviewed Sony's Scott Rohde about the new hardware. Later, Meagan took a look at the Smithsonian's newfound interest in video games.

Aside from GDC news, the latest NPD numbers came out today, revealing a number of interesting trends. BioShock 2 topped the charts, and may have contributed to the Xbox 360 being the highest sold console this month (considering the PS3 shortages). Modern Warfare 2 came in sixth, landing just shy of 10-million copies life-to-date, making it the third-best selling game of all time. Finally, Heavy Rain came in 10th, selling over 200,000 copies – but the game has only been out a week. That's great news for Quantic Dream and Sony, and may point to very strong March sales.

If that wasn't enough news for you, Jeff Cork reported on the incoming surge of 3D televisions, Dan covered the announcement of 3D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures 2, and Miller clued us in to a new downloadable version of Might & Magic. So, is everyone all caught up?

  • Wow...busy day.  You sure you all can handle all that news?

  • Ugh, why have so many people bought Modern Warfare 2?! IT'S THE SAME GAME AS MODERN WARFARE 1! The only difference is that the original's story mode is longer than 3 f**cking hours, and the multiplayer isn't a glitchy mess.

  • excited for the Museum in DC

  • Wow, this is my first time seeing that Sony's new motion wand is going to be called PlayStation Move.  I actually think it's a pretty good name, and this is coming from someone who does not like motion control in video games.

  • Dude. Epic awesomeness called MW2 was only sixth? Wow..hard to believe Bioshock 2 was first..I myself didn't think it was all that good...

  • LOL first seven comments were by bronze members... xD

  • busy day indeed

  • Playstation should call there wand the Pii considerin they took the idea from the Wii- And no matter the story arc or what any of you fanboys say, MW2 is going to sell and be top the charts because of multiplayer; its almost like halo3, the story wasnt as good but people went back for the MP

  • Nope I caught most of that news.

Missed and don't care for the Might and Magic.

The Smithsonian thing I missed also so thanks for a recap.

  • Kinda reluctant to embrace the whole 3D television. I wear glasses and find it a pain to wear 3D glasses....

I really hope there is a future for this hardware/software. But I will not be an adopter of this tech. Maybe you really have to be into 3D for this to be alluring.

  • Busy Day

  • nice.

  • @sergeantLuke... Dude thank you i TOTALLY agree all the way i wish i wouldn of sold the first mw cause mw2 sucks balls!! lol dude get battlefield bad company2.. fifteen hour story:):):)

  • @Chris13:  Dude

Anyway...why don't more companies stick with the much cooler sounding development names?  Stupid focus groups.  "Arc" sounded much better than "move."  Good week for news.  Can't wait to see this PSMove in action.

  • that's a lot in one day

  • Sounds cool

  • I still think sony should have released the white 250 gig FF13 bundle then ps3 would be a head. Noone is buying the 360 FF13 bundle that was an Epic Fail and you tease us with white controllers

  • a lot of stuff today.

  • where is the news that dead space is coming out december 31?

  • no madder what Ps3 is gunna top the charts with the motion controller against Wii and xbox360. If Wii was selling their consoles like hot cakes because of their motion controller, then the PS3 MOVE will blow out of the waters of consoles selling. If you think Xbox 360 Natal will kill the competition of motion controlling generation, think again. What games can you use the Natal with, only sports and that kid that can talk to you. But can it have shooting games where the real gaming is? NO! How the hell is the Natal computer gunna know where you want to aim the gun and how the hell are you gunna move the character around continuously forward. Also when 3D TV's come out, the PS3 will have an upgrade installation on 3D Blue-ray DVD's.
