360 Dethrones The Wii In February

The Nintendo Wii has had a long run at the top of the console sales charts. Following strong sales in February, however, the 360’s sales surpassed the Wii to claim the number one console for the month. Did the PlayStation 3 shortages caused by the holiday rush ease Microsoft’s rise to the top?

According to the February NPD analysis, the Xbox 360 sold 422,000 units last month, up from 332,800 systems in January. This strong gain allowed Microsoft to narrowly pass the 397,900 Wiis sold in February, which is a slight decrease from Nintendo’s 465,800 consoles sold in January. PlayStation 3’s month-to-month sales rose from 276,900 units to 360,100, but it wasn’t enough to climb further up the charts. Sony’s confirmed post-holiday PS3 shortages may have held back the company from finally claiming the top spot. Between the exclusive God of War 3 and other major releases such as Final Fantasy XIII, PS3 sales may rise even more for March.

This is the first time the 360 has taken the number one spot since September 2007, when Halo 3 released. If you think Microsoft is already popping the corks from bottles of champagne while singing “ding dong the Wii is dead,” think again. A lot can change in a month (as has been proven before), but it’s nice to see other manufacturers taking the lead.

How do you feel about the shift in console dominance? Will it last?

  • I thought it was total sales at first... THAT would be very shocking.

  • I think PS3 and 360 will continue to climb.  the Wii has nothing really coming down the pipeline to keep people obsessed with the console.

  • This year more than others I would expect to be back and forth, though with FFXIII and God of War out this month I'd expect more PS3 sales than anything else, but who knows anymore.

  • Karma works! Suck it, Reggie!

  • you can do it PS3. some day people will realize how impresive u are and and u will outsell the 360.

  • Have we finally seen the beginning of the end for the Wii?Time for Nintendo to announce the Wii HD.

  • YES! Unfortunately, the Wii's reign of mediocrity will most likely continue shortly here after

  • Wii sucks. period.

  • the ps3 will reign supreme

  • viva la ps3!

  • Not sure its dominance, but rather a need to buy a new 360 because the old one broke.

  • Good! The Wii is a terrible console.

  • xbox has a brilliant strategy, just make consols that break easily so people have to buy more! jk, xbox is cool, wii can just suck my native american johnson

  • I'm surprised, never saw this coming, but I guess it does make sense

  • Wii SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think nintendo will continue to have the top selling console, because it's the best system for family's which make up a majority of the market

  • Finally, things are looking interesting in the gaming world............

    FINALLY.

  • well people buying real console now..let see the ps3 pull thru too next time...*** hate the wii..

  • I'm glad to see my favorite console up on top of the charts, but this probably won't last long with GoW 3 coming out, that game is going to be the juggarnaut that sells the PS3 like crazy I beleive.

The Wii actually has some highly-anticipated titles (first-party of course) coming out this year, we have Mario Galaxy 2 and the new Metroid game coming out sometime in mid-2010, and the mysterious Zelda title alleged to come out in the holiday.

  • Up with real consoles and down with the casual player and the Gamecube 2.0 ......
