3D TVs Coming, Ready Or Not

Whether you look at Hollywood’s latest fascination with 3D as a natural evolution of entertainment or a cynical way to squeeze more money out of the public, one thing is certain: a number of companies want you to invest in the technology at home. Several TV manufacturers have either released TVs with built-in 3D support or plan to do so in the near future.

A 50” Samsung LED-LCD set is selling for about $3,300, and a 50” Panasonic is also coming to retailers' shelves. Expect to spend just shy of $3,000 for the Panasonic TV, a Blu-ray player and one pair of the required glasses. Sony will be releasing its own 46” model in June, with an estimated price of about $3,900. LG and Vizio are set to bring their 3D TVs to the marketplace in May and August, respectively.Prices seem to be about $1,000 more than TVs of comparable size and specs that lack 3D.

As CNET points out, consumers who do decide to take the 3D plunge will at least initially find limited viewing options. While ESPN and the Discovery Channel have announced plans to devote splinter channels to 3D content, others seem to be taking a wait-and-see approach. Sony has been trumpeting the PlayStation 3’s capabilities as a 3D-ready system, but it also lacks content. Aside from a few game demos and Ubisoft’s Avatar game—also available on the Xbox 360—there aren’t any real apps, killer or otherwise, to make 3D seem like an immediate necessity.

  • Maybe, if we're lucky, this will drop the price of other HDTV's enough so that I can get a decent one.

  • I'm definately wait and see on this one... 3D could be cool, but ideas such as this have flopped a lot in the past.

  • Duuuuuude..... BWOOOTAAALLL!!!!!

  • @Katosepe: That's what I was thinking...because I sure as hell am not buying a 3D tv, that's for sure

  • HA HA HA! No.

TV with the added aggravation of having to keep track of glasses or having enough to provide some to everyone who wants to watch it, not to mention the splitting headaches that come with watching 3D junk. And not to not not mention the lack of support due to people with money knowing this is a complete dumbass thing to invest in.

I promise you, the only way this will catch on is if the porn industry hooks into it.

  • I dont think their going to sell very well.

  • Despite being somewhat impressed with seeing Alice in Wonderland in 3D last weekend, I really see 3D as a gimmick.  Considering how expensive the 3D TVs are going to be, and the limited number of things to watch in 3D...I'm thinking 3D will not catch on very fast.

And is it me, or is every new movie coming out lately in 3D?

  • this is retarded. they need to come up with technology that will produce 3d images without the use of those lame glasses before they release this crap to the public. i hope they all fail miserably.

  • My guess is when the next console generation comes around, 3D will be relevant then. I'll get one THEN, but not now.

Though Discovery channel in HD sounds awesome though

  • I was sold on HD well before I was able to afford it.  This, not so much.  3D has been tried so many times in the past, and it just doesn't catch on.  If it does this time, I'll be surprised.

  • I'll just get another Sony TV for helf the price it is now thank you 3d

  • i don't even have an lcd or a plasma tv i want one really bad but i don't have the money and all the awesome games coming out doesn't help either.hopefully the prices on tv's drop.

and no i will never get 3d,ever.

  • i still don't even have my 360 hooked up to an HDTV

  • Sheesh most people haven't even switched to HDTV's yet, and they're already coming out with 3D TV's? My wallet can't keep up!

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • as soon as i am about to get a sweet tv they come out with new ones. just like when i bought my ps3 and ipod.

  • Sweet, this will be interesting.

  • @ Katosepe

That was literally the first thing that popped into my head, haha

  • Can we stop reporting on the fake 3D craze please?  It's only encouraging these companies to make something that no one wants.

  • Uhm....no. Just...no. If this is where TV is heading, I think I'll start stocking up on books.
