Update: 125-Hour Charity Gaming Marathon Is Underway

UPDATE: The Penguins in the Desert Productions team is currently hosting a live gaming marathon to support Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Catharines - Thorold & District. The team has passed the 60-hour mark and as of earlier today have raised $2,570, which is just half way to their goal of $5,000. For every thousand that is raised, there is enough money to match a child with a mentor who wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise.

Money raised during this event goes toward the application process for parent, child, and volunteer, background checks, volunteer training and screening, child safety training, match monitoring, and more.

Games played so far based on public votes include God of War III, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Pokémon Snap, Donkey Kong 64, Left 4 Dead 2, Metal Gear Solid, GoldenEye, and Ocarina of Time! The marathon will continue until midnight Wednesday (EST). Voting for upcoming titles will continue over the course of the marathon.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Penguins in the Desert Productions team, the same team behind The Zelda Marathon, will soon host another gaming marathon to support Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Catharines - Thorold & District. This fundraising effort will support mentorship programs, future fundraisers and making successful matches for children in the program.

The "mystery" behind the marathon is that supporters will get to vote which games will be played. The team has put together a list of 50 games to choose from. Games voted into the top 20 will be entered in a lottery. The Penguins team will play whichever games are drawn for 125 consecutive hours.

Last November's Zelda marathon raised nearly $3,000 for the charity, and this time around the team aims for a $5,000 goal. Donations can be made during the event via widget that will be available on their website.

You can catch all the action as The Mystery Marathon broadcasts live on the team's website from Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Catharines location on April 30 at 6 p.m. ET.

  • Id do that, Play for 125 hours straight... I think I would have wished I hadnt done it afterwards though.

  • That would be great making them play terrible games.  I love the idea, but 125 hours is really freakin long.  I want someone to really make the sacrifice and play Transformers:  The Movie:  The Game for 125 straight hours.

  • the way games are going these days, it might end up being wii sports or something like that

  • thats a nice thing to do. it might even be fun if they get to play a decent game for that long.

  • Make them play "Pulse Racer" on the original X-Box for the full 125. That game was notorious for receiving the lowest score ever in X-Box Magazine.

  • It's great what they're doing for charity but I'd want a little more than 3000 for playing for 125 hours. That is pretty epic though, last time they did every Zelda game didn't they? Thats a cool feat that I can say I'll never accomplish

  • I don't understand marathons for charity... how does it work?

  • i wish i could be part of the marathon.

  • haha wow thats going to be insane, how can they possibly play any game for that long!??!

  • That owl is a badass

  • Sounds like an awesome idea! I don't know if i could play a single player game for 125 hours straight though...or most multiplayer games...at least not without my eyes rotting out...oh well! Let's Super Smash Bros. it up!

  • Sounds cool! So are they just going to play through games one after another? Or will they play through one game over and over again? Or just play multiplayer forever?

  • Hey guys! Thanks for all the positive feedback! We will essentially be putting the top 20 highest voted games into a lottery. We will draw, and complete as many games from that 20 as we can in the 125 hour time limit. Hope this clarifies things! If it is a game like Mario Kart or Smash Bros that gets drawn, it will be done tournament style with only the winner being exempt from a terrible punishment.

  • I probably could play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, and THe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, for 125 hours

  • Sounds awesome, and those videos are hilarioius

  • This is definitely a really cool idea...I appreciate that people actually do things for charity even if it just playing video games...besides that's like 5 days of videogaming straight...that's a lot

  • Why does Sonic have nipple rings?!?!?!?

  • Because Sonic is hardcore!!!

  • I hope they reach there goal and I would participate myself.

  • I can't play 24 hours straight let alone 125
