Crackdown 2 Gets New Features Via DLC

by Matthew Kato on Mar 09, 2010 at 04:40 AM

Crackdown 2 is coming out this summer, and developer Ruffian Games is already talking about DLC for the title.

Fans of the first Crackdown took full advantage of the game's open world structure and came up with their own ways of having fun and causing mayhem around Pacific City. Fan-made YouTube videos became such a phenomenon that Ruffian Games tells OXM it is including the ability to create and share in-game videos with friends as DLC for Crackdown 2. "People did a lot of things in the first game that we didn't really know could be done." says executive producer Peter Connolly. "We've expanded it a bit now so we're expecting them to do more with it this time. But in order to do a replay system in a four-player co-op game is not a simple task, and we want to do it well."

Why is it DLC and not shipped with the game? Then answer, according to senior test engineer John Noonan, is simple: time. "The reality is we're just working like crazy to get the core game out, then there's six to eight weeks of manufacturing and distribution that goes on. And then all of a sudden the team's got a little bit of bandwidth to start looking at DLC and stuff like that."

Just as this DLC content was driven by fan needs, Ruffian Games says that future DLC will be created based on what players want to see and how they play Crackdown 2.

Are there things from the first title that you'd like to see improved upon or added as DLC for the sequel?
